My husband and son have the same name except for Jr. at the end. My son decided to buy a house, he was told that he had credit score of 0. The mortgage company wanted him to establish some credit before processing the mortgage. He applied for 3 major credit cards and 1 store card. He was approved for all 4. The mortgage company complied and he got his house. All of this took place within 3-4 months.
My husband and I tried to get a loan on something and was turned down because of too much outstanding debt. We obtained a copy of my husband's credit report from all 3 bureaus and they had all of my son's stuff on my husband's, house and all.
So that has started the almost 4 years of fighting with the bureaus and creditors. The creditors do not keep copies of the original application with signature. The bureaus say they only report what the creditors tell them and when they investigate it is my husband's.
Since this whole thing started my son's wife did not pay the bills and left him. He knew nothing until she was gone. All of the debt has gone to collections and the creditors are hounding us for the money, because they all think it is my husband and our credit is trashed.

Response to Wilson

Wilson,
I am a Junior as well. Way back in '92 my employer accused me of embezzlement (turned out to be the store manager, not me), but I lost my job and was forced to move in with my parents. As soon as I did, my accounts started showing up on my dad's report and visa versa. We had the same name and address, so that's all that seemed to matter.
Beats me why they didn't go by our SSNs. To this day I think I still have some of his old accounts on my report. Nothing bad, so I have not bothered trying to get them removed.

Father and son have different social security numbers.

The credit bureaus and creditors should be able to distingush between the father (Sr) and son (Jr) because they both have different social security numbers. How the son's new credit history which started with the purchase of a house and mortgage processing affected the father is beyond me.
