On June 29, 2003, I purchased a Fedders room air conditioner from a local Wal MArt store. The air conditioner had a one year in-home warranty. In March of 2004, the unit stopped working. I called the warranty company at 1-800-332-6658 to recieve a listing of local service providers who would honor the Fedders service warranty. Two names were provided. One immediately stated that he no longer serviced Fedders due to the impossibility in getting paid for his work. The other stated that he would only service the unit if I brought it to his location, thirty miles away. He acknowledged that it was indeed an in-home warranty but that he worked this way because Fedders is nearly impossible to collect from and he minimizes his risk this way.
I called to complain that the warranty is not honored by Fedders via their contracted service providers. A new, local service provider was assigned by Fedders. he showed up and within minutes, had diagnossed the trouble - a burnt motor. He ordered one immediately. Ten weeks later (one hundred ten days after the ordeal began), I await word on the repair. The local service provider has not heard from Fedders about the motor although I tracked it down three weeks ago as being in Kansas City Missouri. I was promised that the motor would be delivered immediately to the serviceman - he has yet to hear from Fedders although I personally provided his contact information to Ms. Bobbi Belder at Fedders Consumer Affairs, P.O. Box 200, Effingham, ILL, 62401.
This ordeal has gone on for approximately four months now and has involved numerous long distance phone calls on my part to receive only broken promises. I inquired at the local Wal Mart store about Fedders products. At one point, the local Wal Mart store was receiving so many returned Fedders room air conditioners, they had to acquire storage room. I truly believe that this qualifies for class action litigation.
