I requested assistance in setting up my new computer and to see that my files were transferred to the new one. I was quoted 1-2 hours to do the job..at no more than $200'

The job took a few hours at a cost to me of over $400. Subsequently, 10 days later, when the system crashed (February 15, 2006)..I called for assistance as a follow up from their agent who presumably set it up correctly. I called to see whether I could get help. They placed me on hold various times and kept me waiting well over 15-minutes.

Finally when I was able to connect with a technician (Len Boyd-sp), he told me to call the next day (February 17, 2006) at 8:00 am Central time, my time was 6:00am PST. I called him at the designated time and left messages. Finally I reached him at about 6:30amPST and he said he would call me in 2-hours (8:30ish).

When he didn't call I called him at 9:00PST..Left a messageI called various times. At approximately 10:00, I reached him and he said he would get back to me but Noon (PST).

At 12:30, when he failed to call, I left various messages and tried numerous extensions but to no avail. Needless to say no one ever called me back.

Tech finder services

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 25, 2006

I have signed up as a tech on several of these services, and as a computer tech (and a good one I might add) let me say this. It is really very difficult to deal with these types of "tech finder" services, as far as getting paid! They will drag their feet paying you, and I have stopped taking calls generated by these service companies for that very reason. I am not saying this is why you are having a hard time getting the tech to come back and help, but it very may well play a part in it. (Plus a "recall" drives their rating down with the company and he may be trying to avoid that, especially if that is his only source of customers)

FYI, it is MUCH better to find a tech, on your own, that you can call and is local to you. I really feel sorry for folks that have used these tech finder services, because in most cases, you are being overcharged to cover the cost of the tech finding service getting their "cut" of the money.(you pay THEM and then THEY pay the tech in most cases....at least that is my experience) The tech is receiving a fraction of what you are paying. I realize that in some cases just picking up the phone book and "trying" a particular company can be frustrating and non-productive, but I would call some of the smaller businesses in town and see who they use. In most cases they have done the research for you, and know who is good, and who to avoid.

Good luck in the future, if I were local to you I would love to help, but alas I am not. Oh...one more thing, if the tech was worth his salt, then he would have made you a CD or DVD of your data, and left it with you just in case of a situation like this. I know when I move data to someone's new machine I do this, as well as keep a copy on a removable drive, and if I don't hear from them within a month or two I erase it, to make space for newer jobs. Along those lines you must TRUST your tech with your data, I never look at customers data, just keep it for a short period of time in case there is a problem, (lost CD or DVD, scratched, etc.) remember I give the customer a copy on disk, so my copy is just a second backup to the customers copy. In fact just today, I was erasing my 200 gig removable disk. I check the date stamp and then delete if I know there is no problem...Hope this gives you some insight on these "tech finder" companies....
All the best,
