I've had three contracts with First American Homebuyers Protection Corporation .. my third contract just began, and I'm a first time home buyer - so I'm a bit new to this. However, I'm completely disappointed in this company and the tactics they employ to discourage claims - and leave consumers without answers!

I could detail challenges with each and every claim I've filed over the past two years ... (total of 6 claims), yet I will mention only 2, one current and ongoing and the other recent past.

Recent past: I called to confirm they would cover a challenge I had with my water softener which had a leak. I described it was in my garage, named off every number and name on the leaking part, and was told it was covered. This was after having been on hold awaiting a "live person" for literally hours. When the person arrived at the home, they told me what it would cost to fix and said I'd need to pay them right then, and any reimbursement would need to be with my warranty company. So, I called and waited forever again ... only to learn they were not going to cover any part of the service - and said I was still liable for the service call, even though I would have never requested the claim had I known it wasn't covered and it was the express reason I called in the first place! It took no less than 6 hours of calling multiple times, speaking with various people, to have the Service Fee waived, and it was only because I had called in and made the person document my question and follow up with me - or I would have not had any grounds for reimbursement.

Current challenge: once again it has been nearly impossible to contact any "live" person! I have a claim in currently for my washer - and while a person came out and indicated a part needed to be replaced, it's been over 2 weeks for a part that was to take 2-3 days - with no follow up, and I cannot contact them. My online account no longer shows the pending claim ... and I was on the phone in excess of 1 1/2 hours in the morning in attempt to speak with someone in claims - and again for over an hour in the afternoon on hold - both times my schedule did not allow me to hold any longer. I was livid! The only way to connect with a live person without waiting 2 hours, is to request a "new contract" - and you will be immediately sent to a customer service representative. I've done this as well - just to get to a live person, and they assure me they will get me right over to someone right away ... yes, you guessed it - on hold, no different. No resolution.

My beliefs about First American Homebuyers Protection Corporation:

  • A True Rip Off
  • Their goal is to discourage claims
  • They use cheap, substandard, unprofessional, and unskilled contractors to service calls
  • They will do everything in thier power to refuse service, payment for service or any repair
  • There is no real recourse for claims
  • The online account is an absolute joke - and is an attempt to have people file claims that in fact are not covered under thier particular warranty, since most people won't even know if an item is specifically covered.
  • (I've had three items I believed by my contract should ALL be under my warranty contract, and was told they were not)

Do Not Use This Company - You Will Not Be Pleased with their lever of service or support. It will only lead to hours of frustration, and ultimately, you'll end up like me, looking for a forum to voice your complaint warning others of thier dishonest practices. Please, I encourage you to go Anywhere else if you are looking for a home warranty - unfortunately, this is my only experience to date and I truly hope they are all not the same. If anyone reading this has had favorable experience with some other company, I welcome your feedback and advice. Thanks

You've been warned - I only wish someone had warned me. Unfortunately, real estate agents and brokers often are the ones advising clients which options to select in this area ... and buying a home can become so overwhelming, we simply fall into the trap of taking their word - and yet, often times, they are looking for the least expensive option, to help you feel good - and simply close!
