12/18/12
I spoke with Lisa Velarde (Executive director) on 9/19/12 re-guarding
me taking custody of my grandchild Troy per court order (which i did
give her a copy of the court order to place in my employee file). I
told her I would not be able to work nights starting on 10/1/12 due to
the minor child not able to be left alone, and if she was unable to work
with me until Jan. (the first of the year) that I needed to know ASAP,
because I needed my 40 hrs per week. She stated at that time that there
would not be a problem and they would work with
me. I went to her again on 9/20/12 to make sure that there would not
be any problems at all with me working the am (teaching) and the
afternoon shift (teaching or helping out if needed). because I was
offered another job and I would accept the other job if she was not able
to accommodate. She stated that they would work with me and not to leave.
I was informed on 10/29/12 that I would not be working in the afternoons
and that there was nothing for me to do to help out. I told her I had spoke to her back on 9/19/12 and that she said they would work with me. My pay check for 10/31/12 was shorted $289.64. The
11/15/12 was the correct amount because she had me training another
employee to teach the Medical Billing and Coding for those 2 weeks.
The 11/30/12 check was again shorted $392.71 and the 12/14/12 check was shorted again $687.21 for a total of $1369.56. According to our employee handbook on page 69 (since I have been an employee with FTC for over 5 yrs that I am entitled to 30 consecutive days pay @ 100% under the FMLA guidelines.
Other departments have gone to Lisa asking for help and were told to them that I would not be able to help them without any reasoning behind this.
I am writing this to you not as a disgruntle employee, but I do have some concerns about my treatment in this matter. I have not called in once nor have I not done what was asked of me when it comes to doing any outside activities such as working the Strawberry Festival, Breast Cancer walks, Car Washes, Meetings etc....I enjoy what I do. I enjoy working with the students and seeing them achieve there goals and I have worked with them one on one when they have asked
for help.
I was hired on as a salary medical instructor and have been cut to hourlywith nothing in writing or even being told verbally that this would be done to me. The last thing I want to do is cause any kind of problems in this company that I have put several yrs into, but I feel that for some reason or another I have been targeted with the comments that have been made to other co-workers. I do not want to take this matter any further than this, but I am willing to do so if needed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
1/3/13
Addendum to the 12/18/12 letter sent out:
I
recieved my pay for the 12/31/12 and was shorted once again this time for the amount of $ 261.02. I feel that I should be reimbursed for the entire amount of $1630.58. I have not received a call or email as of today from anyone in management acknowledging that I have even sent a previous letter. Letter was sent to Mike Zuccheri, Dave Ruggieri, Wallace Pond, Dr. Penn, Dean Ward and Lisa Velarde.

First of all I like to say that I have never worked for or attended school at Florida Technical College.
I do however have a family member who worked for your school at a different campus. I am very familiar with a lot of the employees at all of the campuses and though I have never met your Executive Director I can honestly say I have heard plenty. My advice to you is to pursue your claim with the Department of Labor and other supporting agencies. My understanding has always been that your campus is a joke. I am not trying to be mean but over the years I have heard it all. 1) Ms. Valarde has no business being the Director of anything let alone a Director of a college. The fact that she was given that position is an insult to all other Directors, Faculty, Staff and even the students themselves.
But the way she got the job is even worse. It is common knowledge that she has been passed around from Director to Director. 2) Your campus is also famous for not only passing any and every student but also of having students that are not really there just to bring up the numbers. I am not going to lie I am very aware that this is an unspoken practice that is being used by all of the campuses but the Lakeland campus is by far the worst. 3) Unless you are in the circle of friends you are pretty much on your own. Your pay, your vacation and your job itself is constantly in peril. Lastly, your campus by far has hired more felons to work for them than all of the other campuses combined. How is that even possible?
Do not look for the answer because you will never get it. Trust me, you will never change anything. All you can do is hope to get some of the money that is owed to you.
-God Bless

You've wasted all this time on here. You should be looking for another job. Listen, if you have been there for over 5 years, clearly it wasn't all that bad. Employers have rights to you know. Stop wasting your energy on here and move on. Too many people have too many things to complain about. Some people just need to take a hard look in the mirror, stop blaming all these people when the fact is probably none of this is true. If it was you wouldn't be wasting your time on here with it.

It's unfortunate you were treated this way. But what's really sad is that they allow someone with your limited communication skills to teach students.
If you receive that back pay I hope you'll consider a remedial English course.
