I rent many cars at airports. In April I travelled to San Francisco. To save money (big mistake) I used Fox Rent a Car.

The first thing I notice that Fox was a LONG way from the airport. Their shuttle took a long time to pick me up. The building were the rental company was at was in pretty bad shape and the cars were packed together so bad that I needed to wait for the other customers to move before I could drive away.

I carry a bridge toll transponder so I can quickly drive thru the toll booths. On one occasion, the toll booth was not working and did not register my crossing. Received a letter from the bridge authorities and was told to just send in the toll amount ($3). In June I received a letter from a company that does collection for Fox. The letter said that I was being penalized $40 for the toll booth not registering my crossing. Despite e-mail's, written letters and phone calls, Fox has never responded to my complaint about being charged $40 without my authorization. The collection company said to have the State of California write them a letter that the toll was not working. What a joke.

Bottom line: DO NOT go for the cheaper rental - and avoid Fox at all cost.

Just Curious....

"My experience with the bigger rental companies have been very good. I have had everything from car break-ins to minor accidents. And each time I was treated with respect by the car rental companies and managed to solve any issues."

If you experience was so great, Why switch?! (I just re-read your original post and noticed it was to save money-You get what you pay for).

Why would Fox be liable for YOUR bridge toll?

Also, did you pay the $3 when you were notified or did you ignore it and the $40 is the fine for NOT paying the $3 within a timely limit?

AND.... Why would you be sent to collections if they automatically charged your card?!

I agree that even though I have a registered transponder, I would be liable for the toll.
I have rented many cars throughout the US. My experience with the bigger rental companies have been very good. I have had everything from car break-ins to minor accidents. And each time I was treated with respect by the car rental companies and managed to solve any issues. But Fox completed ignored my letters, e-mail and telephone calls. That is not how a company keeps loyal customers. Instead, Fox now has, based on my complaint, a unsatisfactory record with the BBB in San Francisco along with my write-ups at various consumer web sites. Good luck to Fox with staying in business.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

you would be charged by any rental company

Your transponder did not work. At that time, the toll booth system probably snapped a picture of the car and it was processed as going through a toll booth without paying. Most likely a $40 traffic ticket was issued, and sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, Fox Rental. They checked their records, and found that you were the person renting the car at the time the violation occured. Per your rental agreement, you are responsible for any traffic violations while the car is in your posession.

In this instance, yes, it is your responsibility to prove the tollbooth or transponder malfunctioned or pony up the $40 for the tollbooth violation.
