On November 26, 2013 I booked a round trip ticket on Frontier Airlines from Omaha, NE to Washington D.C. to visit my daughter for Thanksgiving. I only had one carry on bag and a purse for which I was NOT charged on the trip from Omaha to Washington D.C.

However, on the return trip on December 1, 2013, I was stopped at the kiosk before boarding the plane and informed that I would have to pay a $100 fee for the carry on bag. I was shocked and told the Airline Representative that I only had one carry on bag and was not charged a fee for the carry on bag from Omaha to Washington D.C.

I was told that I had no choice but to pay the fee, or I would not be allowed to board the aircraft, or in the alternative, I would have to leave my carry on bag behind. When I asked to speak to a manager, the service reps became rude and threatened to call the Police to have me removed from the gate if I refused to pay.

Keep in mind that I already had a fully paid fare and an assigned seat. Yet I was being told that if I did not pay the extortion money, I would have to leave or be escorted away by police. I told the gate agent that I did not have $100 to pay for the bags, so I asked if they could refund my fare and I would go to another Airline.

Frontier refused to refund the fare and said it could take up to three weeks for me to receive a refund of any fare, and since it was boarding time of the flight, I would not be eligible for a refund if I chosed to fly another Airline.

All the gate agents could barely speak English and insisted that I pay up or get out. Another passenger overhearing what was going on paid the $100, which allowed be to board the aircraft with my fully paid fare ticket.

Don't fly this Airline. You are charged for everything on the plane as it is. There is no reason for them to extort money from citizens returning from visiting family during the hoildays.

Frontier like a couple other airlines charge for a Carry-On.  This is disclosed in the terms.

Now as for not paying on your first trip.  Either you got lucky and they just didn't notice on your original trip or you had a different fare class that entitled you to a free Carry-On that your return ticket didn't.

If you think you were overcharged, take a look at your fare type on your confirmation.  If you had anything but the "basic" fare it does not look like you should not have been charged and would be entitled to a refund(which of course you will send to the person who paid your fee).  But this also brings up another question.  If in your research you find you should have been also charged on the way out...will you pay them the money after the fact?
