I was in my local mall with my girlfriend when I decided to stop in at Gamestop. The one across from Old Navy. (There are two Gamestops in the mall and I don't know why). I came in looking for a new magazine that came out. I found the GameInformer magazine and brought it the register. I looked at the price of the magazine and it read $4.99. After the giving it to the clerk, he told me it came with a "Gamestop Card". I politely declined, but he insisted and said it was free. I was OK with this. However, he started to ask me for my address and phone number. I start to roll my eyes and figure he just wants to put me on mailing list. At this point, I'm a little annoyed but don't show it. I give him the information and he finally rings me up. When he's done he tells me the total is $14.99. I'm like, what the...? I don't say anything and give him my money. I was with my girlfriend at the time and I just wanted to get out of there without complaining. Afterwards, looking at my receipt, I noticed the magazine was on there and next to it in paranthesis, it said 12 issues. The "Gamestop Card" is NOT free! I was conned and I let him con me. It is very annoying to find this out and if Gamestop allows employees to sell subscriptions to people without their knowledge, I will prevent people from buying from their store. It is deceitful and unfair.

Are The Facts Straight?

AUTHOR: TheTruthSeeker - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, January 24, 2010

I used to work for Gamestop. Had a fun time there, enjoyed the job, met some nice customers. Yes, their are some business practices I dont agree with, but no matter what you will get that at any job.

Anyway, I read this story, and I must say, their are a few holes in it I would like to ask you about. You say you picked up a GameInformer that said "$4.99" on it. Are you sure you were looking at a GameInformer? I ask, because GameInformer does not sell for $4.99, it sells for $6.99 for a single issue, and $14.99 for the year. The only magazines that some stores carry that retail for $4.99 are those old Nintendo Power magazines, and those Shogun anime magazines. The price of the GameInformer is printed on the back of the magazine, it isn't on a sticker.

Secondly, and I know all Gamestops have this, at the front counter, either taped to the top of the computer monitors or on the counter itself is a promotional advertisement displaying the GameInformer magazine and Edge Card deal. It clearly states that is it $14.99 for twelve issues of the magazine, as well as the Edge Card for free, as well as the benefits of the Edge Card.

Third, I know you dont like confrontation, but why didn't you ask any questions? Were you afraid the clerk was going to yell at you? I will say this from experience, but employees hate and loathe when a customer wont talk or respond to anything. I cant count the number of times I had a customer come up to the counter, hand me something, and when I ask them a question, they dont respond, like they are better then me. Honestly, communication goes a long way, and I bet if you were to ask about it, then everything would be fine.

#8 UPDATE Employee

Probably should have been better clarified..

AUTHOR: Foxe - (U.S.A.)

Gamestop employees are required to meet a certain quota for Game Informer subscriptions. Our jobs basically hang in the balance based on those and our reservation numbers.

In my store, we don't sell single magazines - we tell the customers that they must purchase the subscription (which really isn't a bad deal in the long run, if you shop at our stores a lot). That way there is no confusion...it makes us look pretty bad if someone only gets one magazine instead of the subscription. If the customer doesn't want to get it, no harm no foul. He shouldn't have just signed you up for it without explaining it further, but maybe he was confused about your intent - especially since you didn't argue the price difference.

Also, on a side note as to why there are probably two Gamestops in the same mall - one was probably originally an EB Games, which was bought out in 2006 by Gamestop. Most of them are kept open just because they haven't got around to closing them...but even then, why bother closing a store if they're making a good income too.. *shrug*

#7 Consumer Suggestion

well the card actually is free

AUTHOR: Anastasiab - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 22, 2009

It's not a ripoff. The card comes free with the magazine when you buy the 12 month subscription and is used to give you 10% off your purchase of used games and give you an extra 10% towards your trade ins. My suggestion would have been to stop and ask the associate why the price was $14 and then he would have explained it. He probably thought you wanted the subscription since people dont normally buy just 1 copy of gameinformer. It benefits you in the long run though because when you go into gamestop from now on you get money off the games you buy. When you think about it $14 isnt so bad.

I know I should have complained there

AUTHOR: Kevin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 03, 2009

I know you guys are right. I should have taken the time to complain right there. And yes, it is only 10 dollars. Fact is, I'm nonconfrontational like that. A lot of people on this site are like that and only complain after the fact. Call me lazy all you want. I just wanted to let people know to not get scammed like I did.

They did bad, but so did you

AUTHOR: Gush - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 03, 2009

Once you declined they should have not given you the card, but maybe he misunderstood you or maybe he was trying to reach some quota. However you should have pointed out the incorrect price rather than just paying it. The transaction wasn't complete when you knew something was wrong, yet you completed it anyways. You should have told him you didn't want the card, or that it should only be $5 or whatever. I'm sure it would have taken 5 seconds for him to void it from the register. Then you could have filed a complaint about being given the card after saying no, but I think the person that rang you up would have expected you to notice that it was 3 times the price and say something if it was wrong. If could have been a simple error, see if other people you know are done the same way. We don't have that problem at the Gamestop I frequent. They do suggest it to you, but are perfectly satisfied with a no and leave you alone.

What?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 02, 2009

Okay if I have this right you go in to buy a $4.99 magazine, yet when the clerk tells you the total is $14.99 you just hand over the money because you didn't want to complain in front of your Girlfriend. So intead of complaining BEFORE you give him the money and have it taken care of right then. You pay them the money and go onto the Internet to complain? This does nothing to get your $10 back from the store.

If everything is exactly as you say, you may have been mis-lead. But you let it happen. If you have learned anything from this is that I hope you have learned to have some "backbone". By having this happen in front of your GF, she may feel that if you didn't stand up for yourself you won't stand up for her...Just something to think about.
