I purchased a 6 month policy with Geico that ended May 12, 2008. On May 9th I paid for a new policy with another insurer that would take effect beginning May 13, 2008- the day after the Geico policy ended.
I received a bill today from Geico for coverage they provided through May 30th. They did not contact me to tell me that my coverage would be extended after the renewal date nor did they imply such in previous billings. The renewal notice simply stated that my policy was ending soon and I should contact them to renew it.
I refuse to pay this bill as I was already with a new policy and insurance company the day after my geico policy was supposed to be done. Not sure how to go about disputing this and I do not want to be a victim of Geico's shady collection practices either.

#3 UPDATE Employee
Double Coverage

I am an insurance agent in TX and I work for GEICO. By law you can not be double covered in the state of TX. Call GEICO and fax over a copy of your current insurance showing that you were covered under another policy. They will clear the policy immediately. The reason the policy has continued is like to previous person stated, by law an insurance company has to notify you prior to cancelling your policy. The number is TX for GEICO is 800-841-3000 and they are available 24/7 and can clear the matter up for you right now.

#2 Consumer Comment
You seem to be greatly mistaken.

In most states, the law requires an insurance company to continue your policy, even upon non payment. This included renewals.
It sounds to me like you did not cancel your policy or even talk to them.
What shady collection practices are you talking about anyhow?
A simple phone call by you would have had them cancelling your policy and you not receiving a bill.
Now, a simple call from you would have them asking for proof of insurance for the time you state you started the new policy and them wiping the debt.
What is wrong with you? There is no rip off here, just a consumer that is not educated with insurance.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
send them a certified letter.

I would send them a certified, return receipt requested letter to inform them that you did not renew or extend your insurance with them. I would include a copy of your documentation that shows that you had insurance through another underwriter that began on the 13th. I would also include a statement that you expect them to ensure that no delinquentcy about this shows on any consumer credit reports about you.
That should do it.
