Sad but true. Online Geico and I agreed to one price. I gave authorization to charge my Visa. Geico added approx $150 without explanation. Seems unbeliveble in this day and age, right?  Not so! here's what happened to me.

While shopping with Geico online  I answered the question "Did you have any incidents in the past five years" with a yes.  (One at fault 3.5 years ago.) It asked for a date so I filled in the month and the year.

When I purchased the insurance, they suprised me with the higher premium and charged it to my Visa without my consent. I had to call and wait for the customer service for 30 minutes, turns out the system created TWO incidents, even coming up with a random date of the "second" accident. The even assigned it with  a phony Month, Date and Year!  When I protested that this NEVER happened the condescending sales lady said, "We'll need a written statement from your insurance carrier at that time to prove the accident never happened."  (What?  Has anyone tried to get a written statement from a past insurance company lately? Impossible, right?)

The bully Geico sales rep didn't realize that Geico WAS my insurance comany at that time.  (I was trying to go back to Geico after a 2 year break.)  To which she answered there was nothing she could do and that I admitted to two accidents while online. quote:  "It's from your IP address, there's nothing we can do now".  I protested saying "Can't you check with DMV? This never happened?". She responded "Not all accidents are reported to the DMV".

NEVER get an online quote with Geico! They created a fictious accident to justify charging me more!

After 2 hours on the phone with the Manager. He admitted " when folks are trying to hide extra accidents, they often answer inconsisitently, so the computer assumed  you really did have a 2nd accident".   Yup...they blamed it on the computer. They even a have lingo in the industry for what happened to me. They called it "pulling a double".

Geico back- peddaled pretty fast when I went on Geico's Facebook page and reported what happened. But only then did they do something.

Be warned.

It is entirely possible that you are a victim of a stolen identity.  Many times, once yor name and/or vehicle idntification is identified (read as 'made public') it is sold to unscrupulous people to use as a phantom vehicle in a hit and run of their vehcile to commit insurance fraud.

All motor vehicle accidents are reported somewhere, whether it is to ou local state DMV, or if an injury is involved, to the CIB (Central Index Bureau).  Geico is correct. You WILL need to get a letter from your prior insurer to get that phantom accident off your record.
