I bought auto insurance from GEICO over the phone on 05 Oct 2007 since I was buying a used car. At that time I did not have a US driver's license though I had a valid foreign driver's license. I was given a quote of USD 1,604 and told that the high rate was because I did not have a US driver's license. I was also told to inform GEICO as soon as I received my US driver's license so that the rate could be adjusted down.

I received my New Hampshire driver's license on 22 Oct 2007. I promptly updated this information with my GEICO account online and contacted their customer service department for a rate adjustment according to the agreement. I recieved a response on 24 Oct 2007 through e-mail stating that the request was being reviewed. I sent a reminder on 25 Oct 2007 and again on 30 Oct 2007, but there was no response. I called up the GEICO customer service center on the night of 30 Oct 2007, and there I was told that the underwriters said there would be no change in the rate until renewal time.

I started a new quote process on GEICO online immediately giving the exact same information on me that was now on my GEICO profile. The same car, the same drivers, the same coverages, and the same driver's license information (i.e. issued in October 2007) yielded a rate of USD 1,099. I contacted GEICO again, equipped with this quote and was told by the customer representative that this quote would be sent to the underwriters for review.

Today I received an e-mail from GEICO stating that my rate would still remain unchanged until renewal time. GEICO did not honor the promise they made at the time I bought my insurance. Further, they did not honor their own rate quote given from their website. I'm unfairly being made to pay a 50% higher rate than that offered to other customers from their website (you can even buy the insurance immediately once its quoted), and I am not being offered any reason why.

I've clearly been ripped off, and I'm not sure what I should do.

GEICO revised the rate!

AUTHOR: Rb - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 06, 2007

I received an e-mail this evening from GEICO simply stating that my policy documents were ready (again) for viewing. I visited my online account and the rate appears to have been finally revised! Its now USD 1,241 and the period has been revised as 22-Oct-07 to 22-Oct-08. USD 78.6 appears to have been charged for the period from 05-Oct-07 to 21-Oct-07 when I was without a US license (thats roughly USD 1,688 per year).

Well, this is definitely a big improvement from the original policy rate, though still higher than the quote I received from them online.
