Thank goodness I've had dealings with fraudulent companies who try to collect money for non existent debts. These people should be found, prosecuted and locked up for a long time because there are many people who are scammed into believing they owe moeny and will be put in jail for a deb t they know nothing about, never did.
I received a call from my daughter in Southern California this moring telling me that a company located in Dallas, TX, name Global Law Firm, was trying to get a hold of me because I was being investigated for check fraud. She was worried and thought I should call them immediately to find out what was going on because I have an ex who happens to live in Texas and is less than honorable. I contacted this company and when they answered the phone the person answered with "Global". That's it, no Global law firm, nothing. I asked what is Global and she told me that it was a law firm. They gave me some information to verify I was who I said I was, I gave them nothing, and then she preceeded to explain that I owed Bank of America $2893 from a contract I entered into with them in 2010. This dollar amount was less, and I was lucky, than the $3000 it costs just to retain an attorney. However, I could pay the debt today, not go to court and all it would cost is $1000. Darn, what a deal. I told her there was no way I owed them anything and that I would contact an attorney and he/she could figure out what was going on. What I needed from here was the case number. Oh you don't have a case number. I told her "I must, or how else would the attorney be able to get the information he needed to proceed". No he can get the information, they do it all the time they don't need a case number. "Well, you guys must have a case number, what is it?" It's not relative to you or what is going on with this case. "That's ok, give me the case number anyway". Very reluctantly, and a little snippy, she gave it to me. I told her I would be in touch with a lawyer and she told me go ahead, we will serve you tomorrow. Oh and this offer is only good for today. Fine is what I told her and then proceeded to contact the legal department of Bank of America.
Bank of America confirmed that no there is nothing on file regarding any type of monetary problem or check fraud regarding me or any account I have had with them and they told me that this was a scam. They, Bank of American, wouldn't contact me through a third party especially since they have my current information. I was recently approved for a credit card through this bank. This guy looked up my previous accounts with Bank of America and went all the way back to 2007. I've had a Bank of America account since 1999. He did find a small problem that was written of in 2007 for $114 which I told him I would look into because I didn't want this on any report. The account number was for a person who listed me as a partner because I was helping him learn about finances. Bank of America wasn't and isn't coming after me of $114, it was written off and it's just something I'd like resolved.
Was I surprised that they found nothing? No, I knew there would be no such records and recognized the scam from other similar types of scams from Cash Advance companies and etc. My advice to everyone, get as much information from the caller as is possible. Be amicable so that they will give you what you ask for and then investigate. There are so many dishonest people in this world who would rather rip people off and collect money rather than work. By being proactive you can protect yourself, your life's savings and the future of your family and done by just some research and not being intimidated by these types of people
