This company was collecting a debt from a credit card that I was past due on (Capital One), and I agreed to make payments of $100/month on this account AND on a second account from the same credit card company. I paid religiously $100/mo for each account for about 6 months. My income changed suddenly and drastically, and they refused to accept payments of smaller amounts. I skipped paying for a few months and called them when I had $100 to pay, and they said it's too late because they're taking it to court and adding another $400 in fees. Just this week I received a letter with my bank copied in, stating that they're garnishing my wages. Since my entire paycheck gets deposited into my bank account via direct deposit, they've got my account locked up and showing overdrawn for about $3500. I can't pay my mortgage, property taxes (due by 3/31), food, car insurance, or even gas to get myself to work. I can take them to court, but that will still leave my account tied up for 2 months minimum, while it's sorted out, and maybe leave me with a reasonable payment arrangement. In the meantime, how am I supposed to live and support my family? By the time my bank account is caught up, my house will be in foreclosure.
Of course, if I lose everything, I have nothing to stop me from getting some payback. Something interesting to look forward to....
