This all started in June of 2005. I went to the jewelry store and purchased an engagement ring for around 2500. To Jared's credit, the store is very nice and they have high quality products. I put 500 down and financed the rest of the ring. They had a promotion going on No interest for 12 months. I decided to take advantage of this offer. I set up my account and went on my way. I logged into their website www.jared.com and input the appropriate information to login to my credit account. I made the first payment around the 5th of the month; the payment was due on the 17th. The payment is made on their website via checking acct. The system does not ask you to enter it twice or anything that would prevent errors; there is also no confirmation e-mail to let you check your submission. Anyway, about 2 days later I realized that the payment had not posted to my checking acct. I called their 1800 number and was told that the payment was in-house and would be processed shortly. 9 days went by and I called back they said that the payment had processed and my accounts should reflect it soon. Now the 18th of the month was here and I get a phone call from their collections demanding a payment. I explained that I had made the payment. The operator looked it up and said that the payment was rejected because the account number was wrong. Now, if this were the case, why didn't they tell me this the two previous times that I called them? The operator wanted a check over the phone and I resubmitted a payment online while she was on the phone instead.this really pissed her off. (Collectors usually get bonuses for payments received). The next month rolls around and now instead of interest free financing, there is legal loan sharking in the amount of 18% interest. I called the 1800 number and they had no record of any conversations, no record of an incorrect account number being submitted, no record of the operator who spoke to me.they had no record of anything. Wow did they screw me over. I asked them why there is no confirmation process for these payments and they said that they have no obligation to do so. The field where the account number is entered even has the paste function disabled so that you can't have error free entry that way. I have paid off the account and will never use the credit through them again. RIP OFF.

I bloviate with purpose not pompas

Wow, I suppose that I struck a nerve. Let me clarify. (And lecture a bit on the FDCPA) Although there may have been an error in submitting the original payment, it is the responsibility of the lender to provide for an informed consent when it comes to matters of payment. 99.9% of businesses accomplish this by having a method of entry verification. Now, there is another issue that deals with Fair Debt collections. In an environment where there are collections over the phone and a multitude of business decisions being handled over the phone, Debtors are obligated to keep complete and accurate records. Unfortunately in my case this did not happen, and by Sterling Jewelers (Parent company of Jared's) own admission, should have been rectified to begin with. This is why they gave me a refund.

So far as it being everyone else's problem, I take full responsibility for any action that I have had an informed consent to and I do not think I had it in this case. I am satisfied with the outcome and I believe that Sterling Jewelers is a good company, but I fell through the cracks.

I think that you (Cory) seem to be aggravated for some reason or another by my posting. When you talk about my long drawn out prose you should realize that I was trying to be as detailed as possible so that other people who read this would know exactly what the situation was. There have been times in the past where I have been late on a payment to other companies and I took the consequences in stride, and you will never see a posting from me about them. This was a case where I was not meet half way (in the beginning, later they did. See my original update) and should have been.

Have a great day.

You Said It Yourself

You said it yourself. "The system does not ask you to enter it twice or anything that would prevent errors.". YOU never admit that YOU put in the wrong account number. All this and that and everyone else's problem but not once do you admit to your mistake. That little fact is buried in this long drawn out prose. I mean how tough is it to type in the correct number and then look at the number BEFORE you enter it? Who's incompetence? That's always a good way to go about it. Blame someone else for your own incompetence. Sounds good to me.

I called to cancel my account. Tbe agent asked why, I explained to her the whole thing again. She said that they should have waived the charges and reset my account. She apologised....and get this, she refunded all the interest that I payed over the course of the credit line. So I guess that maybee I will do business with them again.
