My wife and I have had a Kohl's card since 1998; both of us have perfect credit and have never missed a payment.  I have been paying online via my bank's online bill pay.

Received a call the other day that said our payment was now two months overdue

"How can that be?" I asked.  I've paid every bill I've ever received.  I jumped online to my bank's bill pay site and confirmed that the last statement I received was in May 2012.

Kohl's Rep: "Well, I've spoken to hundreds of people over the last few days that have also siad the same thing...perfect pay histories as well, and they haven't received statements the past few months, either.  It must be something on your end with your bank."

"Really?  Do the hundreds of people you spoke with all bank with the same company?"

Kohl's Rep:  "How would we know that?"

Me:  "Well, they all have an account with Kohls, so it is obviously something on your end."

I paid the balance in full over the phone with a pay-by-check, and they reversed two months of late fees.  The rep said they would put in a request to the proper department to have the credit reporting updated to show no lates and that it shouldn't be a problem.

Guess what?  Letter came today saying the reporting is accurate and they weren't going to update anything.

Called again, rude rep said due to FCRA that there isn't anything they can do.

Never received any emails, letters or phone calls to say that a payment was late.  I have confirmed with my bank and printed out proof that no statements were received from Kohl's since May.

I am sure I am not the only one this has happened to.  Calls to the company are worthless.  They did tell me that they did a security conversion or update earlier this year that may have caused a problem but wouldn't elaborate.

We are taking our business elsewhere.

How is this OK?

AUTHOR: cici23 - ()

POSTED: Thursday, August 22, 2013

This same thing happened to me. I use the Kohl's card maybe once a year, and only do so then for theh discout. How do I know when the bill is due? They NEVER sent me even one bill! EVERYTHING else I have is on autopay, but Kohl's doesn't allow it.... so I rely on a bill!! It knocked my credit score down 100 points (from being over 800! Perfect credit!!), for one $55 bill! If the purpose of Kohl's really is to get paid, which I would assume it is, then they should send bills! How does sending it against my credit, without one bill, help them get their money?

Statements are not a courtesy

AUTHOR: Jenn - ()

POSTED: Saturday, July 06, 2013

I am not sure where this idea of statements as a courtesy comes from. I may be reading this wrong, but does it not say in the 2009 CARD Act signed in my Obama that they MUST send you a statement 21 days before your payment is due?

I got resolution with this letter to the head of PR

AUTHOR: PissedinTexas - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 13, 2013

This email worked for me and I had Kohls remove this off of my credit report in less than 24 hours.  Maybe "class action" did the trick.  See her response below my email.  Good luck!  Don't use store credit cards!  And CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT EVERY 6 MONTHS!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Subject: Kohls credit card practices

Ms. Johnson,

I have been a Kohls customer for 15 plus years.  Recently I finally succumbed to the inticement of saving 15% on my purchase by applying for your store's credit card.  This was the biggest mistake of my life!  A purchase of a measly $70 has devastated my credit.  I forgot I even used a Kohls charge, and never received a bill or the credit card for several months.

I was reminded that I opened the account when I received a call on my voicemail to call about my account. When I tried to make a payment I was told I needed the full credit card number in order to pay and I had no payment coupon to pay with either. So how was I supposed to make a payment?  I had to wait to get the card...which made me late. Through no fault of my own, I have a late payment history on my credit report. I don't carry balanced and I had super credit before this happened!

Now, my husband and I are trying to buy a home and we find out that my credit score has dropped by 100 points because of Kohls. The bank is charging us an additional 75 basis points (.75%) which is $300 additional dollars per month or $100,000 over the life of the loan. Additionally, they are asking us for another 5% down payment. All because of Kohls reporting us as late when it wasn't even our fault.

I have seen on credit card boards and consumer complaint boards in the Internet that this is common practice by Kohls. Many people are talking class action law suit. I would hope it doesn't come to that and that you help me and others that have experienced the same as me!

All I want is the late payment removed from my credit report!

Respectfully,

KOHLS RESPONSE BELOW:

Kohl's credit hurts your real credit!

AUTHOR: nerd4hire - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 13, 2013

After paying my card statement in full over the phone I was charged late fees and was never sent a statement regarding these fees, which later accrued more interest. It is the second time this has happened, and since I seldom use this card, I didn't find out I "owed" them any money until the collection agency called me to pay $60. I'm more than happy to pay if I do owe them money, that has never been a problem, but I'm not happy to pay for a scam. Their outrageous APR and penalties are pretty much a ploy to "legally" raise their revenue.

Throughout the years I have been very careful with my credit score, but Kohl's happens to be the one entity that has managed to hurt it in my adult life. My advice to you: cancel your card altogether, and just go to a mall next time, they probably have better quality anyway.

Kohls/Capital One Deception

AUTHOR: PissedinTexas - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 29, 2013

I have a similar experience, and only found out yesterday that Kohls/CapOne reported me to the credit bureau late, which is holding up mortgage.

I opened a credit account 9/2012 at the store like an idiot to save a buck.  The total transaction was $70.  I completely forgot about opening the account and did not receive a statement for a couple of months OR the credit card AND when I finally got a statement I called Kohls to pay online after unsuccessfully to set up on their website.  I was told that I COULD NOT make a payment without knowing the FULL account number on the credit card, didn't matter that I had a partial from the statement I finally received.  They refused to look up my account by my SSN, which I know they can do.  I am convinced this is a scam to rack up the late fees (my total transaction cost $170 after they added late fees for a few months still refusing to let me pay my bill).  I finally got the card and paid off the account, I still have not even activated the card, in fact, I shredded it!

I had a breach at my bank and had to close an account, since I didn't have any other way to pay my bill at the time other than through bill pay or online, neither of which would work without the full credit card number on the card.  This dropped my score from 720 to 620.

The blame is on you.

AUTHOR: Ruben - (U.S.A.)

If you do not get a statement about your mortgage, does that mean you will not pay it.  Companies are not required to send you a statement, they do it as a courtesy.  You are an adult and know when your bills are due.
