I am writing a dispute I have with LA Tan in Crystal Lake, IL. The charge I am disputing results in a membership I signed up for at L.A. Tan in Crystal Lake, IL (the original agreement signed in Hoffman Estates, IL). I instated a membership in January of 2006. The membership that I signed up for told me that I needed to be a member for 3 months in order to get the special price of $19.99/mo and have payments auto-debited from an account. I agreed and signed paperwork (that I was not given copies of, as they told me they send them to corporate to keep them on file which really should have been my first clue.)
In March 2006 I decided to upgrade to a better package, and they advised me at that time (verbally) in the Crystal Lake L.A. Tan that a manager needed to do so as upgrades were apparently not a typical procedure there. So I had to return at a time when a manager was present in order to upgrade (in March) the remaining balance paid in cash for the month as the amount had already been auto-debited for the old membership amount. The concurrent billings there forth were set to be $59.99/month.
In June I asked to cancel my membership having reached what I believed to be a total of well over three months as I had agreed to up front. As I had not made a payment yet for June they told me that they were unable to cancel me at that time as I had not been a member for three months. According to them, now the story changes, I had now upgraded a membership which means I am making a new agreement! So I need to go through 3 months as the upper level member. Since I could not seem to win this battle and also having to discuss this with managers at THEIR convenience, I agreed to make the one final payment (to take place in July) verbally with the manager at that time. I was also told that I was to give 30 days notice in order to cancel a membership that would go into effect after the date of the next billing (which owuld have been the June payment).
I signed a cancellation agreement on that visit (also, I was not given a copy at this time), and was told I was fee to tan there until August 15 when my next payment would be due (and would no longer be billed as my cancellation would be in effect). Come August 15... I find a charge on my credit card (go figure!) for the next month of billing. I called LA Tan to dispute the charges and their story has changed yet again. Now they tell me that I need to be a member under this plan for 60 DAYS!! I was NOT told this up front, nor do I have documentation telling me such as I was given NOTHING from them to lay out the guidelines of any of these packages.
I am waiting for them to call me back to tell me if they will remove the charge this month and thus forward, however (and this was the clincher for me!) they have no record of me EVER cancelling, even though I had to take time out of my schedule to meet with the manager on duty and abide by her schedule. So I am at a loss, they have all of the documentation, and I have none. I can not urge you enough to avoid signing memberships with this company - or at least this location - which is run by a team of high school students. I guarrantee that any given time you go, there will be no one over the age of 20 there to help you. I admit much frustration with them, and am currently looking for a more reputable company to spend my money with.

I came across this after googling L.A. Tan lawsuit IL. I was just wondering if they ever got caught ripping people off. I haven’t seen a lawsuit for the place I went to in Des Plaines on Metropolitan Way, yet I totally relate to your situation. I bought a membership which wasn’t the same recurring fee each month. I told them I wanted to cancel. They confirmed. Next time they said they never got a confirmation that I got confirmed. They always came up with different excuses. I got ripped off from the start and even the manager was lying to me. They never gave me any paper forms to take home with me. This was 3 years ago so I don’t remember everything that happened but I hated going there. It was very sketchy. I do remember telling that I want to cancel so many times though. I even called and they said I need to come in and confirm it with them. It took them many months to finally stop the payments. They couldn’t even reverse the payment. They would put a paper in my face that I signed the first day telling me it’s against the rules to reverse a payment once it went through without 30 days prior notice, which I told them 30 days prior!
It was all high school kids as well. They would never give me a receipt. I would see them always clicking on their computer after I came in. They probably weren’t clicking the right things, on purpose, just to rip me off. They always seemed like they were acting. They were having so much fun ripping me off. Also, when I switched to the dark spray tan level, I feel like that was a lie. My tan looked the same as the lower level I used to get. So about the sketchy monthly payments that didn’t match what the package claimed, I emailed the corporate company proof of it and they said I need to talk to the manager of the company. I ask the company when the manager is going to be in and this said tomorrow morning. Of course she’s not there and this happened 2 other times! I think the 4th time they lied about who the manager was. She certainly did not look like a manager or have a tag. Of course nothing is resolved. They kept playing games with me and I was just an innocent customer. Everytime I would ask them questions they didn’t like, they would give me attitude and say things in the most confusing way. I should of recorded them! Sometimes the room they have to me wasn’t clean. Sometimes there would be a long wait time when there was rooms available. I was literally the only one there sometimes. I wish I knew about this website at the time. How did they not close down? I found out about Vita Liberata tanning mousse and I never went back to that rip off place. There are a lot of good tanning mousses. Please save your money y’all and don’t support this rotten business!

I know for a fact that at my location here in Western Springs (47th and Gilbert) things are run much tighter and I have been employed by L.A.Tan for over 2 years. I'm currently the Assistant manager and proud of my location. I know that at some locations it's all younger kids working there, here there are younger kids but they know what they are doing. I teach them VERY well and I don't mess around with someones money. anyways, there is now only a ONE BLILLING CYCLE requirement for memberships. which means at least ONE automatic withdraw. But you don't need a manager to updrage your package that isn't right. So this is all the Crystal Lake location because I know for a fact things are done better here!
