Beware of Lamson College. They offer a surgical technologist program that they claim will take one year to complete. 10 months of classroom work and a 2 month "externship" in a local hospital. Once this is completed, you are told you will be ready to seek employment in the surg tech field.
Because of this "12 month" program bait, the cost of this program is $25,000.00 (Yes, twenty five thousand dollars), but as we were all told, we would be out in the field earning money after this great program.
Rumors began within the first 2-3 months of class. Externship positions were "backed up" and "some" were having to wait a "few" months before being able to complete this program. No one from the staff/admin would address concerns, basically saying not to worry about it, they were working on the problem.
This "problem" was never addressed internally obviously. There's a group of us who completed our classroom courses in June and have yet (it is mid-November now) to be placed in a local hospital...we have been out of the class room for 6 months now.
Parents budgets, student budgets and plans have all been put on hold while we wait for the school to find a hospital to place us. And, the school continues (!) to accept new students.
We don't know what to do, and know that we have been screwed, so this is a warning to anyone thinking of attending Lamson College (for anything!!), run, do not walk to another College. All Lamson wants is your money, they don't give a crap about what happens after that. If you have just started, get out now. Cut your losses.

Accreditation proves nothing

A school who proves that their program meets accreditation only does so once every 10 years. They can pull all the stops out when auditors are there to prove their worth and excellence of their program. Once the certification is rendered it does not mean that the school continues to perform at that level.
This school does not meet the standards of AST or CAHEEP. If it did there would not be a 6 month waiting list for externs to get to their sites to finish their education. Did you ever think that it it not so much that the school does not want to place students at sub standard hospital sites but that the HOSPITALS don't want Lamson students training there?
I know of several ex lamson students at my hospital that went to school there, waited forever for extern training and still do not work in the field of surgical technology.
The current ratio of students there is over 15 to one and they have hired ex students to act as preceptors in the lab who have no scrubbing experience to save money.
I wonder if CAAHEP knows of the current state of their program.
Take your time and money elsewhere. This program is a sham.

Revenge is a dish served best cold

First of all i would like to point out i worked for lamson for an extended period of time. The person here stating that the ''Kelli'' is the instructor from lamson college is incorrect. The KellY from lamson has been with lamson and before that was in a different hospital before she was working at bryman. Kelly is an amazing individual and has never done anything to harm or slow the process of her students. If anything she helps them overcome curriculum difficulties when they arent understanding and helps them understand things that they normally wouldnt understand at a community college where you have no one on one time. Lamson's wait time is completely understandable considering the fact that they do not want to send you out on the field somewhere that you arent going to meet expectations or learn how the field differs from the classroom.
Getting online and posting things about someones life that you dont know or dont understand is ridiculous and a waste of everyones time. It sounds to me like a bitter student who didnt get theyre way is just out for revenge. And tarnishing someones name to do that is no way to go. People like that are the ones who DO NOT make it in the medical field. Hospitals will not tolerate childish rumors and pissy fits.

Lamson is unfair

Lamson knew about the extern problem back in May 08 and refused to do anything, the instructors get written up whenever they try to mediate the problems with the students. Lamson did stop enrolling students, and the laid off all of the part time instuctors with no notice. They were all informed at 9:00pm on a Thursday night not to come back. The rest of the instructors were not given thier schedules in fear they would tell the part timers and they would not show up for work. Jim Geymount the academic dean has repeatedly passed students who have failed a class, all the student needs to do is threaten to sue and they get passed right thru, I have proof.
The instructors that are left are being worked over 40 hours a week with no overtime pay. Kelli from Mesa Az is actually the surgical Tech program manager at lamson, she went straight from being a student to teaching at Brymann and is now at Lamson, she was fired from Brymann for dating a student. if i were having surgery i would want someone with experience in the field, something we students at Lamson are not getting. Unfortunately I am almost done with the program and they have my money so I am sticking it out, but my advice to anyone thinking about this school is check, double check and triple check everything they tell you, or better yet go to Gateway Comm College, I wish I had.......

From a fellow student at Lamson.

I can understand some frustration but your report insinuates intentional actions to "ripoff" students. From what I understand, administration is trying to correct the situation by holding back enrolling new students to the surgical tech program and invite current students to stay and get their associates degree while their waiting to be placed at their extern site.
As a fellow Lamson student in the surgical tech program, being "ripped off" never felt so good.

Not all the facts
AUTHOR: Kelli - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, January 12, 2009
This student obviously has issues with the college but does not address all of the facts. First the Surgical Tech. program is an exceptional program and is one of the only 3 that is accredited in the state. Secondly the wait for externship is understandable. Unless this person just wanted to be placed anywhere and didn't care about what type of site they recieved. One of the reasons it takes so long is because the school will not just send students anywhere, they want them to get a well rounded experience. Perhaps this person should have just been sent out to do hair transplants or perhaps dental surgery! Before you make any judgements about this company maybe you should check it out yourself and not make any decisions based on someone with an obvious bad attitude. I know when I go in for surgery I want someone who has had a great extern experience passing instruments not someone who went just anywhere! How about you?
