A few years ago I received a notification from the City of Chicago saying I had an unpaid parking ticket. It said I received a ticket because I was parked on a Chicago city street and my license plate sticker had expired several months prior. First of all, I rarely go to Chicago, and when I do, I don't drive into the city and I certainly wouldn't park on the street. Second, the vehicle they said was parked with an expired sticker I had sold 6 months prior to the date, and I removed the license plates when I sold it. Third, I was at work all day the day in question and I live several hours from Chicago.

The letter I received stated that there was a court date coming up in which I could contest the ticket. I did not have to appear, I could mail in my response or just pay the ticket. According to the City of Chicago, these were valid contestations. So I sent in a letter explaining those things, proof of sale of my vehicle, and proof that I was at work the day in question. A few months later I received another letter stating that I had not sufficiently proven that I didn't owe the ticket, and now the fine had increased.

A few months later I received a letter from this law office/collection agency stating that they now had my debt and I needed to pay them. I sent them the same information but was told it had been too long to be able to contest the ticket. I still refused to pay. I haven't heard anything from them in over a year.

Just got another letter from them today with the same information, same amount due. The amount isn't very high, only $146, but I still don't want to pay it because I never owed it. The original parking ticket was $40. Had I known that every time I contested it they were going to increase the amount (went to $80 after the first hearing, then up to $146 with fees) I might have considered paying the $40, but they probably would have continued to hound me about it.
