I was inquiring about a job that I applied for through Martin and Lane... their company doesn't exist and i was involved in an online scam. I wanted to follow up with the company and their website is down...

This is the original email that they sent me:

Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXXX,

Thank you for applying for the opening "Administrative Assistant" this position is currently listed in Nashville, Tennessee with a pay of $42,000.

We have completed our initial review of the applications, and are happy to inform you that you have been accepted by our client for a further interview.

This stage closes on Friday, August 2nd at 9pm, so its very important you complete the online screening before this date, submissions after this date will not be accepted. Your interview will be scheduled for the following week.

After filling out the questions provided on a website that seemed to be very organized and legitimate (through their above link), it proceeded to let me know that I had 'one more step to complete'. Their site led me to creditreport.com where I had to sign up for a 7 day free trial using my credit card info. I only used my credit card info on the credit report's website, not on Martin and Lane's. Martin and Lane did require me to input my account number as confirmation that I had done this. It didn't seem as fishy to me because the job that I was applying for handled a great deal of company money and accounts info... how they knew I applied to this job is beyond me (unless the job was a fabrication to begin with). I used a legitimate job website to apply to it on Nashvillehelpwanted.com... Martin and Lane assured me that my credit report wasn't going to be accessed. It didn't even cross my mind that I just gave them everything, but my social so they could have easily had access to all my information using my account number that i provided to them.

I just got off the phone with creditreport.com and after cancelling my 7 day free trial, made an inquiry on any account activity that had posted and luckily none had during the seven days of my trial run. I had to call a 1-800 number to place an alert on my account through all three credit bureaus, just incase someone from this fraudulent company decides to steal my identity.

Please be wary!!! Looking back on this oversite now shows how much of a scam it was... first off, no company would post how much compensation was for a response email to a resume submission and secondly, no company will want the confirmation number to your credit report anything!! Be wary!
