As a result of an accident, the car that my son was using was totaled in December of 2010, sold to a junkyard and the plates returned to the Maryland MVA in January, 2011. In March I began receiving requests from the MVA asking that I prove that I had insurance on this vehicle (which I had not owned since December) and threatening to suspend a set of plates that had been in the MVA's possession since January. I have - 3 times - provided the MVA with copies of an invoice from the junkyard that we sold the car to and the documentation that I received when I turned in the plates. Yet today - AGAIN - I received a letter from the MVA advising me that the plates on this car had been suspended.
I am self-employed and run my own consulting company. Every hour that I have to spend correcting mistakes made by the Maryland MVA is an hour that I am not doing billable work. Having to spend time correcting the MVA's mistakes once was bad enough - I have now had to do this 3 times and the MVA has still not managed to correctly resolve this problem.
I have sent multiple emails to John Kuo, the Maryland MVA Administrator, but have still gotten no resolution. I have emailed the Governor of Maryland. At this point I have a good mind to send the MVA an invoice for the hours spent doing the job that your employees should have done, plus administrative fees for printing, mailing, copying, and emailing. When they don't pay that invoice, I intend to sue their butts. Maybe THEN they will pay some attention to sorting out the mess that they've created!

What they want is a copy of the receipt you received when you turned the tags in. Then they will match it with the information they received from your insurance company when the insurance on that vehicle was canceled and try to determine if you owe them money. Also, an FR-19 (MD proof of insurance) form should accompany the receipt and send them via registered mail to the headquarters. All CYA moves in case they try to hit you with a big bill for uninsured tags.
