 To whomever this may concern,

My name is Benjamin E. Sarver. In March of 2018 I was employed by McLane Corp. and I told myself this would be the job that I would retire from. However, in October 2018, I ran into a situation which made me very uncomfortable. My mother in law passed away which changed my life. A short time before this happened in a conversation with a female supervisor (Doris) I mentioned that my wife was white.

Her response was a look of shock after which things changed and a lot of personal question were asked, “Where is she was from, who is her family, etc. At the time I really didn’t think much of it, but I soon noticed how much things had changed in her behavior towards me. This supervisor, Doris, started getting short with me at the same time it became obvious that she was picking on me and continuing to obtain personal information, not relative to the job. Such as: "How are things at home, how are things with your wife" small yet detailed things.

It was at this point that I even realized that all the supervisors, and people in the front office where all white. There is not absolutely one person in the office nor the warehouse in a management or supervisory position of color (Black/ Hispanic). I over-heard a white manager tell a white supervisor that he should act more "like us and less like them" I didn’t catch it at the time, but now I get it, because this supervisor would hang out and conversate with the employees that are Black and Hispanic.

When my Mother-in-law passed away, we had to move, so I let them know that during this time of sorrow things would be a little difficult. I would continue to come to work on time as usual and do my job as well but needed to get my house in order. Pulling carpets, painting walls, moving furniture etc. But, the next couple of weeks I was very busy as we had to transition from a condo to the house where my wife grew up. I still did my job... 100% without any less perfection.
On October 1, I finished my work as usual and I left work about 5 pm. My supervisor, Doris had forgotten to inform me of a job and therefore she called me back to work around about an hour later to tell me about a load that she wanted me to pick up that day. So, on my own time after work I still returned to the job site, clocked in, got a truck and trailer, picked up the load, came back to the job site, clocked out again and left as usual.

A week later on Oct 8, 2018, Doris called me into her office and said she was writing me up for using foul language the week before. Many of the guys in our warehouse have been known to use foul language on occasion. Although I explained that it was not me, she said she was going to take the word of someone else who said they heard me cursing, angry in the warehouse. Doris had already left the job due to illness earlier that day and was not present nor was she on the premises during the time in question. She also said that she knew I was angry although she was not even in the building

When I contacted HR, they called her and told her to tear up and throw away the write-up. She cannot write me up for something you didn’t witness or for using foul language because other guys in the warehouse use foul language all day.

Now after this incident happened she really had it in for me, she never acknowledged she was wrong never apologized, never called me into her office to get paperwork like she did every morning. In fact, I felt she hated me even more after HR told her to dismiss the write up, she never looked me in the eye and never spoke to me again. I felt threatened and intimidated since she was made to remove the write-up.

I may have gone home sick once, I had never called out before in all the months of my employment with McLean but I had to leave early because I was physically ill and shaken by how mean her demeanor towards me had become and the manner in which she spoke to me all that day (oct 8).  By October 10, I had had enough. I felt this prejudice and hatred like she wanted to hurt me. Under all the excess pressure all day I continued to do my job with excellence, perfection and on time daily until I decided to give my two-week notice rather that just walk out the door immediately.
But a day or two later they called me into the office and asked for my keys, badge and fuel card, told me to leave the premises. But on October 17, as I return the uniforms, I was told to never return to the premises again, even if I worked for an outside company and had to make a delivery there I would not be welcome.

Upon my investigation I found an extensive arrest record on Doris Jean Sandusky. Charges ranging from picking pockets, manufacturing controlled substance, domestic violence, battery, prison time in 2000 and this is the person who is in a supervisory position with a threatening attitude towards me.
They almost didn’t hire me because of a felony charge I had in the 1980. Did they actually hire her with all these charges, or did they even do a background check on this white lady? I am convinced this company is filled with racist people. I see and I hear from other Black and Hispanic employees that there is racism. I have sat in the office with Rex and Dennis and am 100% sure they are both deep seeded racist men. Based on conversations I have personally had with them.
Furthermore I gave them a 2 week notice and everything I was supposed to do, when I worked I gave 100% excellence, even outside in the heat of day, for them to treat me like this is proof when I gave my notice and said I was not happy, no-one never asked, "Well how can we make you happy" or what can we do to fix the problem?  The minute they found out my wife was white, their demeanor, attitude towards me and everything all changed in spite of the fact that I was an excellent employee.
                                                                                  Sincerely Benjamin Sarver
