What ever you do, do not call or use Mr. Rooter if you need any plumbing done inside or outside of your house.

I had another plumber, J&A South Park here for problems I was having with my basement toilet, they found tree roots in the pipe coming into the basement toilet, they tried to clear the clog with a snake, without success. They went outside to the main and put a camera in to see if they could snake the main outside, when they found tree roots crushed all of my terra cotta pipes outside.

I had a couple of estimates from other plumbers, which were very expensive. I called Mr. Rooter for an estimate. A project manager from Mr. Rooter came out the same day I called and had the lowest estimate that I had received, so I asked him how soon could they start the job, he replied they could have the utility companies come out with in a half hour to mark off their lines and could have their equipment here within an hour. I signed a contract for $4,370.00 dollars for them to hydro scrub the basement toilet pipe to the main outside, (they dug a 7 foot by 7 foot hole to do this) they installed new plastic to the house trap and fresh air intake and had approval from the Health Department for what they did.

They explained to me they would have to dig up half of my basement from the stack to the outside main to replace the terra cotta pipes because they were also crushed, which they were. By this time I had paid them $14,683.00 dollars out of my own pocket.

My insurance would only cover the cost of the inside pipes, so I requested the actual cost of the inside pipes, for at least 7 months. The day the Health inspector came out the owner of Mr. Rooter was there. I told him he wasn't leaving until I got the actual cost of the inside pipes. He gave me the cost of the inside pipes was $52.48 dollars. I received a letter from Mr. Rooter indicating the cost of the pipes were $4,404.00 dollars.

They didn't fill in the hole in the front yard or connect the pipe to anything because they wanted another $10,500.00 to dig from the main outside of the house to the street to connect to the Boro's main, without checking where the Boro's main was. I didn't have the money and couldn't get a loan for the extra $10,500.00 dollars, so they left the hole open until I got the money.

Everyone told me this didn't make sense, so my cousin's husband had his plumber friend from his work come out for his opinion. He checked everything they did and looked at the work orders, told me Mr. Rooter ripped me off big time, saying it should have cost no more than $5,000.00 dollars, for what the did, that I should call the first plumber come out to finish the job, so I did.

J&A South Park looked at what Mr. Rooter did outside, and couldn't believe that the Health inspector approved what they did, so they called the Health inspector. The Health inspector set up a meeting with both plumbers at my house the next day. He was not happy with what Mr. Rooter did and told them they didn't have to dig up the front yard out to the street, he called the Boro to snake out their sewer and mark off where their main was, which was right where Mr. Rooter had the pipe that wasn't connected to anything.

Needless to say I paid J&A South Park an extra $5,525.00 dollars to have them finish the job (they let me make monthly payments). They had to dig down another 7 feet and dig out an 8 inch root (the pipe was 8 inches too) that totally blocked the pipe to the Boro's main. They had the Health inspector come out again and he was happy to see the job done right. If you want an honest, hard working, competent reliable plumber, I highly suggest you call J&A South Park.

I feel that I should receive $10,000.00 for being over charged for the work they did.

I also posted a rip off report recently.  If you do a search for it, it is there and contains links that I gathered on the internet.  One of those links is a link to my blog where I am able to post video and pictures.  I just wanted to post on your Rip off Report in support of your situation.  Mr. Rooter of Pittsburgh/Cranberry uses high pressure, deceptive sales tactics to force desperate homeowners into a corner of confusion.  90% of sewer lines don't need replaced; yet, anyone who has a crisis is who Mr. Rooter Employees target.

After they have the contract signed and your money, they are gone like the wind.  The icing on the cake is that, after the contract is completed and they have already been paid (on the first day they write that contract and they are sure to make you sign that day so that they can tell you we have your money, too bad), the same problem continued to exist and was not made better in any way.  Moreover, they didn't even do the work up to the point outlined in the contract....A breech of contract.  We shouldn't let them get away with this and they, apparently, have been.

Robert,

First of all, I am not a competitor. I originially wrote the complaint referring to J & A South Park as "the other plumber".  To avoid confusion, I decided to use their company name.

I felt J & A South Parks' estimate was to high, and they had to schedule the work. Since I did not have use of either of my bathrooms, I did not have the option of waiting. That is the reason I did not consider them for the job. My cousins' husband's work friend (blaa, blaa, blaa) only does plumbing at work. He does not do side jobs, or I would have had him do it.      Shar

I would have got the zone of the pipes from the city and dug those up and replaced for 350 bucks for twice the quality. I would allow payment in small increments of water bottles from the table in you're basement.

Isn't the company you are recommending the one who COULDN'T do the job in the first place?

By the way when your cousin's husband...blah..blah..blah come out how come you didn't have them give you an estimate?  After all the "first" plumber all they did was snake out the pipes..with NO success and ran a camera to see that the pipes were crushed.

There is another possibility.  Perhaps you are the competitor.  If that is the case might I recommend that if you try to post reports against other companies you at least proof read your report to make sure you don't come off looking incompetent as well.
