Just a few days ago,National Tire and Battery fired me because, as an employee,i had my own vehicle worked on. I had another associate write up a work order to just put brake pads on the front of my car.I got the pads myself to save money because this company wants to make money off of employees vehicles too!

They were still making money off of me with the labor on the work order.Needless to say, they don't allow employees to service their own vehicles for some reason that's beyond me.Even though i worked on the district managers yellow classic mustang a couple weeks ago without even a work order and that was not a problem. I suppose the ADM does not have to follow company policies!!!!!!!!

All i was wanting was the brake pads installed but when i checked on the uncertified technician performing the work,he was attempting to turn my brake rotors without my permission and it was also not on the work order to turn the rotors, just install the brake pads.

With this being said,I had been having problems with my store manager and one other associate stealing my sales, taking customers after i introduce myself to assist them and dealing with the store manager cursing, yelling and arguing with associates and customers on numerous occasions.
Just recently,i had a sales associate yell at me in front of my technicians and continued until the store manager physically removed him from the shop.He then tried to say i grabbed him. There are cameras installed at this location,so the cameras told the real truth.

I called the hear line which is supposed to be for company associates with internal concerns not resolved by your local management. I  then received a call from the human resources manager which
hung up on me after being totally rude to me and not wanting to hear the whole story. He stated that what i did by purchasing my own parts is a zero tolerance offense and that's that!!
The bottom line is because i would not go along with thieving associates, crooked company policies taking money from me and not allowing insubordination as the service manager,i was terminated!!

This store at 1670 northeast expressway in Atlanta is being run by mostly crooked management that will argue with their customers and associates in front of other customers. They also always gave me the customers that had issues with their work performed wrong just so they would not loose money with their own commission pay.

Not only was i the top service manager in the district in just 3 months of employment because of being honest with my customers,i had the respect of my technicians because i did not yell and curse at them daily like the store manager was doing when i started.

If this store is any indication of how they implement company policies, then i would never want this company to work on a wagon for me!!! 99 percent of the mechanics are not ASE certified to work on any system of your automobile and the sales associates have no clue of what they are attempting to sale you or why you need it,so you are just rolling the dice by going to this shop now that they decided to fire a true service manager that is not only ASE certified in every area of work that we performed there, but could physically go behind the mechanics and verify a proper fix to your vehicle.

Retaliation by termination on a whistle blower like myself is totally wrong when my actions were in the best interest of the customer and my family.

By the way, this all started when the company hired me as the service manager and paid me as a mechanic for two months before they tried correcting my pay which they still owe me money.I had to call the hear line about this problem also so needless to say this HEAR line knows me by voice i'm sure!

Hey Bill D, no anger at all, just low tolerance for stupidity

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Hey Bill D,

I do not have any anger issues.

I just like messing with retards and illiterates! It is a source of recreation for me.

And, you are still wrong, and illiterate. You have your opinion, but it is based on being a retard.

I actually have practical experience, and I am literate too.

And you are still stupid, and illiterate, so you will never beat me at anything.

Got it, junior?

AUTHOR: Bill d - (U.S.A.)

umm----i kind of did read what you wrote--so did everyone else--you are not misunderstood-your just wrong--get over it-----it may be "standard" practice for a shop to cut your rotors--but i disagree with this and feel the rotor should not be touched if it does not cause pulsation--if it pulsates it should be replaced--of course the books say different--and this is what you are basing your knowledge on(books)---try thinking for yourself!!!!!----you are also talking about high performance brakes????---what is your defintion of high performance??---you cannot cut drilled or crossed rotors which are known to be high performance rotors?!-----also you would figure high performance brakes may run hotter as you are at higher speeds----but if you cut the rotors for high performance brakes you take off metal that would have been used to absorb that heat--the rotor will get hottor and that will cause it to warp and cause pulsation-----if you had a pulsation in the first place you cannot drive----most especially for high performance brakes should you NOT cut the rotors---i also change my rotors every other pad replacement---keep learnin

To Bill D, BIG DEAL, you are still an idiot!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

And, I was fixing jets when you were in diapers. [1986-1994].

I was a crew chief on T-38's, A-10's, and F-111's, and a Flight Engineer on C-130's.

Unlike your barely 5 skill level a*s, I was a 7 level technician, also phase dock qualified and assisted in depot level repairs.

I got my first ASE's at Maricopa Tech in 1987.

I built and raced cars at the Firebird Raceway in Phoenix 1986-1988.

I stand by my opinion that anyone who installs new brake pads without doing anything to the rotors is a MORON. You can resurface the rotors without taking much off, but you do need to at least scuff them to remove glazing and minor imperfections.

I turn brand new rotors right out of the box after getting warped and out of round ones right out of the box new. Again, you don't need to actually take much off. The surfaces mate better when this is done.

Many rotors cannot be turned, but I replace those at every pad change. Not absolutely needed, but is only for "best" performance, as I stated im my first post on this issue. Too bad illiterates cannot understand plain English.

And, you write the way you do ONLY because you are stupid and lazy.

Bill D needs to go back to the 3rd grade

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

This "Bill D" needs to go back to the third grade.

That way he can get a better job than Tire Kingdom.

Obviously if you work at Tire Kingdom, you are some kid who knows nothing, and you make no money so you drive crap. Therefore, you know nothing about performance brake jobs.

You write like a third grader on crack.

Grow up. Get some education. Get a real job.

and also

AUTHOR: Bill d - (U.S.A.)

on the issue of brakes--let's not forget that if you cut them you make them thinner--the rotors job is to absorb heat---it cannot absord as much heat--metal can warp under high heat which will cause the pulsation---if you have a pulsation in the first place you suck and cannot drive and are on the brake a lot---if you had a pulsation in the first place--thinning the metal will only make that pulsation go away for a month or 2 and it is back again faster--i have seen this!-----i just cannot stand the attitude about people think you should cut there rotors with every brake job even for a standard pad replacement---it is just unnecessary work

Jim...Notice I said "Turn OR replace"..Its all in the details

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

I clearly said turn or replace.

Also fully aware that many rotors are not supposed to be turned

However I also know that any rotor that cannot be turned should be replaced when new pads are installed, for best performance.

Please re-read what I actually wrote.

i see here

AUTHOR: Bill d - (U.S.A.)

i also work at tire kingdom though in a  different area---yes it is true that it is against company policy to work on your own car--and i will agree this is pretty stupid and not right---however--most store managers allow it and should allow it--stupid things like changing oil, even your brake pads-stupid things---but there must have been something going on for them to use that stupid a*s excuse to fire you---my shop now we have a master tech there and i have 2 ase's----why do i always have to help him do the most basic things(putting a belt on a bmw)-other cars 2----the first 3 jobs he did the car came back--the first was struts ona  ford taurus-somehow the hub broke? and the customer was back 5 minutes later----although i am not perfect--my point is it doesn't matter what certs you have--your either a good employee or your not--this master tech walks around that this place sucks--blah blah blah--other people now have this attitude and negativity spreads----he will be gone soon--along with the other mechanic who also cuaght the disease of this place sucks attitude--only now he combines this place sucks and doesn't work--one day i had to put a starter ina  volkswagen passat cause he said he needed my small hands--i just always help like a good dumbass--so as i am easily sticking my hand in the wheel well mounting the starter bolts-he is sitting on the alignment rack texting on his phone!!!!!!!!!no wonder this guy and the master tech will be gone soon--one of the tire techs is also catching this attitude but he is not full blown yet--and yes sometimes my mangers piss me off-but for the most part i shut up and do it--for example let's take the glove box off just to check the cabin air filter--then he couldn't sell it--let's not forget the free alignment checks he keeps putting on the ticket--he wants you to do more to make his job easier-today i had this lady watchin me rotate her tires-this was all she was there for-her free tire rotation--he put an alignments check on there--i asked her what was going on with the alignment and she is like huh??--i said yea he put an alignment check--she knew nothing about it--i asked her if her wheel is off or anything and she says no it goes straight--i said i'll drive it to check--it went straight--but they really expect me to just put it on the rack and go through the whole thing--everytime i have done this-they don't sell it--i drive the car and if it goes right-i say it needs an alignment-they say put it on the rack so i can show the customer-most of the time they don't--they also try to sell the alignment at the door and looking at the tires--when they say no they keep tryin to sell the alignment---to me this is not a good sales move--and it is dickhead service mangers like you who would agree with this just so you can "show" the customer--after the customer already said twice don't worry about the alignment---they do not sell the alignments this way and they keep asking--things like this i now just ignore--i mean come on---take the f**king glovebox off just to check a $30 cabin air filter-and then not sell it--just work smart and not allow yourself to be overworked for nothing-other than these stupid things i have no complaints-if your store mangers an idiot-you got to deal with it--but many people have idiot bosses---in any case-bottom line--you must have been pissing everyone off---next job you find may i suggest expecting work to suck and dealing with stupid people--if you want more and don't get it you'll only be pissed-----oh yea-----what is up with the dumbass who says it is standard to cut the rotors-----if there is nothing wrong with the rotors(no pulsation) why cut them???--occasionally you will get a stupid 5mph squek or something by just pad slapping---when people come back--i just re surface the pads themselves and the squeaks go away----i have cut rotors and did the "standard" and dumbass's come back and say it squeaks and then want me to re cut them--umm-no--i will fix your car my way--not yours!!!!----if the rotors are under spec they should be replaced---bottom line to this--why fix what shouldn't be fixed----also--let us say you have a pulsation-yes cutting the rotors will get rid of this---but all your doing really is making it thinner and it cannot absorb as much heat--your brakes will run hottor and brake fade----it is always best to replace rotors or not touch them

Master Mechanic jim here

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

NO you do NOT "Always turn rotors" Some cannot be machined, any rotor that's smooth and not grooved IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MACHINED.
ONLY machine rotors warped or deeply grooved, Turning ALL rotors is a ripoff to charge more Labor, nothing More.
As well there's NO mention of ever measuring the rotor's thickness, THIS IS A MUST. Rotors nave a minimum that CANNOT be machined smaller That's dangerous they'll break.
I once had a car that was pulling left when the brakes were applied, No d**n wonder, the right front rotor had been machined undersized and had broken off , The disc was broken free from the hub
(It didn't rotate) which is why that side didn't work at all, no kidding it pulled there was only a brake on the left front.

As far as letting mechanics work on their own vehicles any shop that does NOT permit it will shortly be out of business as their Mechanics QUIT. (cheap a*s company)
And yes I worked on my vehicles (With permission) As needed.

ANY "service manager" should know about turning rotors

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

You claim to be a "service manager", but you seem suprised that a mechanic would turn your rotors during the brake pad installation process.

This is standard procedure for any professional shop and/or mechanic.

You either turn or replace the rotors when you install brake pads. If you fail to do this, the vehicle may handle funny when braking, and your new pads will wear out prematurely.

You obviously don't know anything.

As far as your other "issues" go, you sound like a whiney baby, and I'm sure that's what got you fired.

You need to get along with people and be diplomatic on the job, especially in a management position. Escalating your problems to the rest of the company is what did you in.

Maybe you could get a job at the TLE, as they don't turn rotors there, nor does anyone even know how to!

A couple of things...

AUTHOR: Striderq - (U.S.A.)

1) Would you have allowed a customer to purchase brake pads and just pay you for labor to install them? I don't think so. So what made you think you could do this?
2) What exactly did you blow the whistle on? Nothing in your post included this. Basically you broke company policy and got caught. There's been friction between you and other employees. You got canned. No whistle blowing and no retaliation. Just bad work habits and breaking of company policy.
3) And to prevent your cliam: I do not now and have never worked for this company.
