When filing my taxes this year I used turbo tax. I had used them last year and never had any problems. Instead of getting the Turbo Tax card that they had last year I was referred to use a Netspend card. I obliged and signed up. Little did I know I was about to be in for a very bumpy ride. I recieved my card in the mail on Tuesday, I called to activate it and they said I had to fax or email in copies of my Drivers license, Social security card and another document to prove my identity. I sent a copy of my w2 thinking that would be good. I was then told I had to wait 24-48 hours. So i waited and never heard anything back. I decided to call them to find out what was going on. They said that my w2 had not been approved since the address differed on it. I explained that I do not have any utilitie bills in my name and my pay check stubs also don't have an adress and if they did it would not be current as I had JUST moved into my new place. So I asked if my tax return would be ok since it has in several places my current address. They said to send it in and wait another 24-48 hours. Still I received no response.. So I called them again now I am begining to get irate because my tax refund has already been deposited into the account and basically they are holding my money hostage. They told me the document had been denied... So now here I am a week later without my income tax, no way to get netspend to take the block off my account. I asked what happens if i close the account and was told it would take 20 days in order for them to process a check... so for a month this company gets to hold my money and collect interest off of it for nothing but causing me a headache. This is by far the worst company I have ever had to deal with and hope that no one ever decides to use them!!

Suck

It sucks but blame the people who last year did tax scams filing tax returns for dead people and getting 9K a pop back for each return. The IRS "verified them" like they said they did you right.
It might suck to have to wait to access money you planned to use but it's not like their doing it to be mean their just making sure you are you as tax scams have heavily increased the past couple year. And I don't work for netspend I work for another prepaid product that unfortunately has been forced to close due to these tax scams in all be grateful that their making sure your getting your money and not some guy in Russia.

I use Netspend
AUTHOR: chestercheetah - (United States of America)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, February 13, 2013
I've used Netspend since 2005. I've had some issues with them through the years but overall they've done a pretty good job. When they do jack with me, I give them an earful. Here's some helpful hints:
PAPERWORK - The US government requires Netspend to verify your identity before establishing an account and allowing access to deposited funds. Part of the reason is that for the longest time, prepaid debit cards were highly utilized for money laundering and financing illegal operations. Identity Theft is also a concern. From this point on, if they haven't done their due diligence in verifying the customer and use of the Netspend debit card, it's their a*s that's on the line.
HOLDS - Depending on your deposit history and account activity, Netspend may place a temporary hold on your account until they validate that the funds are indeed available. They've done this to me before on 2 occasions and I called and raised holy hell! The money was eventually released once I was able to validate it's origin.
IN GENERAL - Know your rights. The only way I avoid getting the runaround from Netspend is by knowing what their stated policies are and also what Federal law mandates (see Electronic Funds Transfer Act - EFTA). That will take you a loooooooooooooooong way. Also, the automatons answering the phone are often times powerless to act on your issue. Escalate when you have to and don't take a NO from the frontline when you ask them to transfer you. Ask to speak to a supervisor but have your ducks in a row when you speak to them.

No you did not reference BBB???

Wait...wait...wait you mean the same BBB that ripoffreport.com has posted clearly on their website giving that so called "A+" rating to a terrorist group?? I keep speaking to middle eastern people at NetSpend about my American money and you think BBB makes us sleep better at night. Once again my fellow Americans, do not trust NetSpend.

I'm not an employee, just a happy customer who loves getting direct deposits earlier than my coworkers from a company who has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. It's human nature to whine and complain when things don't go your way but very rare to publicly go out of one's way to compliment someone/something that they use on a daily basis and have no problems with. I do hope OP has gotten his/her issue resolved and now has access to the money.
By the way, do a little research on the Patriot Act and prepaid cards. Bush's Patriot Act *requires* that ALL financial institutions verify identities of their customers.

Do not give NetSpend a chance

For anyone to say give NetSpend I will only conclude you are an employee of NetSpend. These people have asked for everything that involves identity theft. When you begin to supply more than 2 or 3 pieces of document to prove your identity you have to have your senses in the air that your items are at risk. The IRS confirmed identity, employment, wages earned before approving refund. Is NetSpend above IRS?? So why do they feel this is a job for them to do?
It is FRAUD 101, and anyone who objects then yes you are an employee of NetSpend or you have not reviewd your account with them in months or years.

Netspend Customer for years
AUTHOR: Alvarez29229 - (United States of America)
SUBMITTED: Monday, February 11, 2013
I have been a loyal Netspend customers for years. I have NEVER had a problem with Netspend! I am writing this rebuttal for one reason: to point out that Netspend is taking necessary precautions to ensure there is no identity theft going on. While I can understand the poster's issue with wanting/needing access to his or her tax refund, I would personally be grateful that this company is wanting to verify that I am the person I claim to be and not some crook trying to steal the tax refund.
Have you tried faxing them a copy of your lease with your new address? That might get things moving a little quicker for you. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get this fixed soon!
As I said, I have been a Netspend customer for years with no issues. Netspend posts deposits as soon as they receive them, rather than holding them like most banks. I received my tax refund on 2/10, rather than having to wait until the date of 2/13 given by the IRS. I also receive my weekly direct deposit from my employer on Wednesday nights, rather than on Friday mornings like my coworkers do. The monthly fee is less than $5 and no minimum balance is required, unlike most banks. Netspend does offer Overdraft Protection but even there, the fees are less than those at banks. I don't think anyone has the right to complain about overdraft fees because you know what you are getting into when you overdraft your account.
Netspend has a BBB rating of A+ for a reason. I am a very satisfied customer, as are most. I sincerely hope the original poster gets everything straight but please keep in mind that NS has your safety in mind when asking you to provide such information.
I hope others will give Netspend a chance. Keep in mind that people generally only make posts online (here, Facebook, Twitter, etc...) when they have a complaint. Netspend has hundreds of thousands of customers and the complaints being seen on these sites represent a VERY small percentage of customers.
