I placed an online order on 8/11, using a 20% discount and free shipping code found on a coupon website (I've used codes from this site before). I confirmed the total amount -and that the discounts had taken - in my shopping cart and approved $51.88 to be charged to my credit card. I saved a copy of the receipt page showing, $51.88. The next day, I received an email confirmation - but without the discounts applied - for a total $63.99. I immediately emailed the company about the discrepancy and received a corrected receipt showing $51.88.

However, when the clothing arrived, the receipt in the package showed $63.99 and that is what they charged to my American Express.

I've contacted customer care 3 times and each time they tell me what a valued customer I am but that they don't accept third-party codes. Well, they did accept a third party code, I approved $51.88 to be charged to my card and I am SHOCKED that they can charge more than I authorized and get away with it. This seems very wrong to me.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

Here's a better idea (or two.)

""If you don't want us to charge more than you authorize then stop trying to scam us!""

1. READ YOUR MERCHANT agreements with the credit card companies whose cards you accept as payment. Charging MORE than the customer authorized is a violation of your merchant agreement.

After an order is placed on line and you determine that MORE should be charged, you should CONTACT THE CUSTOMER and notify the customer of the INCREASED price BEFORE processing the order - that's what a reputable business will do. You should offer the customer the opportunity to agree to the increased cost OR CANCEL the order.

2. Don't post any more on the internet-leave that to the folks in your company that are the POLICY MAKERS/public relations office.

Here is an idea

Stop getting illegal codes from third party websites! We offer many specials all the time. We have a list of every code and what dates they start and when they expire. Our website doesn't pick them up but when the order is placed our live system knows they are illegal and takes them off the order and charges the correct amount. Some of those codes might work because the third party site probably found them on our direct site www.newport-news.com. If you don't want us to charge more than you authorize then stop trying to scam us!

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Dispute it with your credit card.

Since you saved the receipt page this will be easy for you to correct.

Call your credit card company (toll free number on back of card) and explain the discrepancy. Offer to email the saved receipt page to the representative and state that you want the CORRECT amount only to be charged-you want a reverse charge for the EXCESS monies that were charged without authorization.

Your CC company should fix this rather quickly for you.

Good luck.
