On May 24, 2008 I was approached by a woman standing in front of Walgreens on Broadway and 15th in Sacramento. She had a folding table set up with some children's games and t-shirts about an organization called "Find Missing Children." She said they were fundraising for the the "Second largest organization for missing children in the country" and would I like to buy a t-shirt. I specifically asked what percentage of donations went to the charity. She said, and I quote, "We don't keep any money ourselves. 100% of the money goes to Find Missing Children." When I agreed to make a contribution, but did not want a t-shirt, she said they would go ahead and "make a contribution to a needy child."

After rubbing my credit card on the receipt pad and giving me a copy, I then had the chance to read the back of the receipt. Only 5% is given to "Find Missing Children" and 95% is kept by the fundraising organization. I went back and asked her (Kristy) about this obvious discrepency from her original promise. She then said, "Oh, no, I was telling the truth. We give 100% of the 5% to Find Missing Children." They are completely dishonest in their fundraising. She then refused to give me a the original paperwork on my donation.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

contact credit card company

AUTHOR: Northwest - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 25, 2008

I suggest you call the credit card company and ask this payment to be stopped. The number is probably on the back of your card and your statements. This is not a sure cure. I have used this service of credit card sompanies a few times, and I usually get a song and dance about we can't do that in this case, blah blah blah. The card represenative will spend more time telling me why this will not work in this case than it would take to initiate an inquiry. But when I have persisted, the vendors never contested the complaint.

Be sure to stress this was a deceptive charge.
