After reading other people's complaints, I understand better what has happened to me. I wish I had never bought my insurance with NJ CURE! This insurer is a total rip off, the worse ever! The way they operate, the owners of this company should be brought to justice. NJ CURE claims to be a "non-profit" insurer and be non-discriminatory, which are both totally untrue facts as far as I can tell.

NJ CURE attracts low or moderate income consumers, offering what appears to be competitive low premiums in comparison to other insurance companies. But don't be fooled! This company is a scam! You'd be better off purchasing insurance with another company, even if that means paying more. At the end, you (like I) can end up losing a lot.

I, like most people, buy insurance for the purpose of protecting myself in case something bad and unexpected, like a car accident, happen. The last thing I want is to pay premiums to an insurer who will hold me financially responsible for any potential losses or damages, no matter the circumstances. But this is exactly what NJ CURE does. If you ever get involved in a car accident like I did (whether it is your fault or not), the Underwriting Department manager will void your agreement and pay nothing.

Shortly after the accident, things started to get nasty. The folks in the Claims Division (that department that typically employs the "friendliest" people) start working on their deceptive scheme in full gear: making repeated phone calls, sending letters threatening to end your policy if you don't reply "immediately", and eventually interrogating you like a criminal and asking all kind of personal questions that they were probably never entitled to ask. They'll search for anything in what you say and do anything not to process your claim, even using intimidation if necessary (especially if you're a poor immigrant or minority, apparently). All that is done to void your agreement and pay nothing. How they do this? By finding any possible loophole in the law (it's not hard, especially when the exec was a former New Jersey Insurance Commissioner) and accusing you of fraud when in fact, they're more likely the ones committing fraud themselves. This is what they did with me and apparently what they do routinely to their policy holders (who they call "members").

in my case, the Claim Specialist asked me about anyone who lived in my building, including my landlord, his relatives, and some people I don't even know (how she got this list of names, I am curious to know). Eventually, I received a letter from the Underwriting Manager stating that; because I omitted to mention that my boyfriend lived with me at the time I filed my application for car insurance, my policy thus was being voided completely from the date it was originated (by the way, this is totally untrue and I can easily prove it). I could not believe they dared doing that. But let's say that my boyfriend and I moved in together, what's the point? My boyfriend doesn't even have a driver's license and never drives my car. Most importantly, he was not even a passenger in the car when the accident happened. As far as I'm concerned, whether he lives with me or not is totally irrelevant. An honest insurer would probably simply ask me to add my boyfriend as a household member, but still process the claim and pay for the damages incurred by the other party.

I also noted that NJ CURE didn't include a letter advising me of my right to file a complaint with the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance if I disagreed with their decision (all insurers are supposed to do that as far as I know). Considering how many complaints have apparently been filed with the Department of Insurance against this company, it is easy to understand why! I just did that, and advise everyone who was ripped off by NJ CURE to do the same. Companies like these should be out-of-business real fast! What they do is totally obnoxious. These people are nothing but thugs!

Just a follow up here. The Department of Insurance is now investigating my complaint, so hopefully I may get some results and documents related to the accident / claim (I never got any). I hopefully will also get a refund for my premiums. But to show how much lies this company tells, check this out:

In her letter to me last month, the Underwriting Manager at CURE wrote: a final determination has not been made regarding the return of any premium dollars to you. Any premiums returned to you will be offset by any payment made to you or third parties to satisfy claims made against your policy. More than 30 days have now passed, and I still havent received any refund or correspondence from CURE regarding this matter...

Two weeks ago, I received a letter from the Director of Underwriting stating that:the claimant has been paid for damages by CURE, however didnt provide me with any documentation related to the claim. THIS IS A TOTAL LIE because NJ CURE never made any payment to third parties. Because CURE voided my policy from the date of inception, thus I was technically uninsured at the time of the accident (or rather CURE denied that my policy provides coverage for the loss) consequently the drivers own auto insurance paid for the damages to the drivers vehicle, and not NJ CURE. NJ CURE really seems to have it both ways: turn the liability over to the other driver's auto insurance (like another poster on this site wrote), and at the same still cash on their customers!
