On Jan. 14th we took our 9-year-old English Bulldog for a bath only. She had no health issues at the time we dropped her off. Within 35-40 minutes from drop off time, Petco called and said we needed to pick Bella up, as she was having trouble breathing. We arrived at Petco within 5 minutes & took straight to vet, where Bella could not be revived. (She was not breathing when we arrived at Petco.)  The necropsy results say that her lungs collapsed due to a lack of oxygen! She suffocated. Petco has refused to allow me to see the employee statements describing what happened and say that same are confidential due to possible litigation. I simply want to know what happened to my dog in the short time she was in Petco's care. If it is something that could be prevented, then I would ask Petco to train their staff accordingly or do not accept breeds that they cannot care for... i.e., determining the signs of respiratory distress. I just feel that I have been lied to again and again then pawned off to the insurance carrier who is rude and horrible!!! I haven't made a claim. I just want answers.

My dog suffered a preventable disgusting death due to either the lack of knowledge of respiratory distress in bulldogs or simple negligence of not paying attention to her due to being busy with too many other things. I have prayed and prayed. I hope the silver lining in this tragedy is that another bulldog does not die due to the inexperience or negligence of groomers. I miss my Bella every day. Research your groomers! When you check the pet in, ask groomer to described signs of respiratory distress. Ask for the protocol for same. If the groomer can't give you the same answer your vet would, don't leave your dog!!

You can also send copies of your Ripoff Report to all of your Local TV News Stations and put it to the attention of 'Investigative Reporter'. There is a chance that someone will contact you in order to help you to find out what really happened to Bella. They might also put your story on TV. Good luck, and please keep us updated.

You can contact an attorney and tell him or her your story. There is a chance that an attorney might take the case on a contingency fee basis. That way, you are not responsible for payment unless you win. An attorney can subpoena employees who were present that day and also subpoena the video for the day, if it is available. We obviously know that Petco has video surveillance, right? The entire event could have been captured on video.

You can also ask all of employees who were present that day what happened. It isn't illegal for a customer to ask an employee a question, correct? If Petco is not allowing their employees to tell a paying customer what happened then Petco is obviously covering-up something, wouldn't you agree? Someone obvioulsy knows the truth. If Bella were my dog, I would want to know what really happened that day. Good luck to you and to your family, and please keep us updated.

Petco Has Refused to Release Any Information

AUTHOR: DawnH - ()

POSTED: Monday, February 10, 2014

I thank you both for your response and for the information. When I have asked Petco for information, such as witness statements that were taken during the "internal investigation," Petco stated that said information was confidential and made for the purposes of litigation. The General Manager then told me that there was nothing else that they could do or provide me with other than the information for Petco's insurance carrier. When the insurance carrier called me, I again asked for any information pertaining to the death of my dog.

The carrier stated that all information was considered privileged and confidential, as same was made in the anticipation of litigation. My response, "If Petco did nothing wrong, as alleged, then there should be no problem with releasing the information to me." I was told that no information would be provided to me without a court order. ... Nothing can replace Bella or the heartbreak my family has experienced due to her loss. BUT, I want people to know what can happen to their beloved pet when they leave them in the care of Petco...and what Petco's response will be.

It appears that Petco does have video surveillance inside at least one of their stores, according to information on the web. You can 'Google' this- SHOTS FIRED IN PETCO STORE PAWNATION, and watch the video on the web for proof.

It appears that Petco sells nylon and mesh dog muzzles, according to information that is available on the web. You can 'Google' this- PETCO NYLON & MESH DOG MUZZLE, and visit the related sites for more information. If Bella had a muzzle on while she was being bathed, it could be part of the reason that she suffocated. Most large companies have video surveillance in their stores. It is possible that the event was caught on camera. You might want to consider contacting the corporate offices in order to retrieve the video, if it is available.

Good luck to you and your family!
