Pre-paid legal services were offered as an employee benefit at my previous employer. We were able to have the services provided by prepaid legal at a discounted rate. I elected to use this because of the presentation at the Orientation. I only had to pay $5.00 per month for the services but it was $5.00 too much! From November 2003 through August 2005 I paid for the services. The one time I really needed assistance was in August 2005. Here is my incident:

My husband and I were to close on a home on July 26,2005. We had packed all of our belonging's (3 children) and taken off work for the closing and to move. On the day of the closing we were informed via telephone call that our financing feel through at the last minute that the underwritter refused it because our bankruptcy was only 32 months out and the requirement was 36 months. We had not even started looking for a home until we recieved a letter of approval and a gurantee of lending.

After calling several lenders I learned that the process would have to start over from the beggining new appraisal, new inspections etc. We were wiped out and there was nothing we could do. The house we were renting was scheduled for a new renter to move in on the 1st of August and we had to move out of there.

I called Pre-paid legal's 1-800 number to see if I had any recourse. I was told that an attorney would contact me after I had told this whole story- I was finally contacted by an attorney she said she was a consumer rights attorney - I had to tell the whole story over again- she was very understanding and said that not only should I recieve the money back that I was out but the seller as well since the title had already been put in our name etc.

This attorney was going to email me some documents asap to fill out, sign and fax back asap while she consulted a realestate attorney. After not recieving this email for 2days I called the 1-800# again, they were going to leave her a message but were sure she was just gathering information so she would know what forms to send. Another day no email. I called again explained the situation and confirmed that the correct email address was on record- it was!

They would have the attorney call me. No call. Called again of course all they could do was send a message to the attorney this was a call center. Left another message.

This is November I still have not recieved a phone call. No contact at all. My job ended in September because the company I worked for was about as competent as prepaid leagal. I recieved an option to continue my coverage. I wrote in the comments box if I continue my coverage will I get a response on the issue that was pending. I recieved No response!

We now reside in a small rent house (most of our belongings in storage) are out $1500.00 in inspections, $500.00 in appraisal fees, the deposits and final bills on 2 addresses for utilites (since I had arranged for the utility transfer to the new house) not to mention the time spent by us, the realator and the seller and thier $500.00 to transfer the title to our name. I have made arangements for payment of these things with the finance company that messed us around, I did my own letters etc. Since we were too broke to take any actions with a "REAL ATTORNEY".

I just felt like I should have recieved something besides a cute little card and stickers for my car for my monthly subscription to pre-paid legal.

Not really PPL's fault

AUTHOR: Timothy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 19, 2005

As much as I distrust PPL, it sounds like your beef is with the attorney, not PPL. Of course, PPL did send you to an attorney who failed to attend to your case, but primary culpability lies with the attorney.

It is an ethical violation for an attorney to fail to give a client's case the appropriate attention. When this failure rises to a level where the client is seriously affected, it may amount to legal malpractice.

You should probably shop around for an lawyer to look over this situation.
