I brought my car into this shop in September 2005. I requested to have them to replace the thermostat, the upper and lower radiator hoses, and flush the coolant at an agreed upon price of $200.
At about 4 pm they were done with my vehicle. I drove to drop off the vehicle and noticed it was leaking radiator fluid. The important point is the vehicle was not leaking coolant prior to me bringing the car into the shop. If it had been leaking, I would have requested them to find the leak instead of doing the specific work I had requested.
I drove the car back over there and they found the drain plug from the radiator was leaking and when they went to tighten it, it would leak more.
Cal (the manager) was very insistent that they didn't even touch the drain plug. I told him I watched them work on the car the entire time and saw them working on that area of the vehicle - for 20 minutes no less (between 11 am and 11:25 am) - it seemed to me they were having problems getting the drain started (the first necessary part of the job at hand). Cal insisted they drained from the lower radiator hose port and that was on the drivers side of the vehicle - whereas the drain plug is on the passenger side. I told Cal I saw the technician with my own eyes working on the passenger side right at the beginning of the job.
Cal offered to buy a new drain plug to see if that would fix the leak - but it did not. A new radiator is the only proper solution. Cal said he would do the labor for free but he refused to provide the radiator for free. Since I needed the car the next day - I said replace the radiator and we will sort this out later. Cal had me sign a quote for $270 for the radiator. Now that I have time to check prices online, I see I could have bought a radiator for $140 at Checkers, and he claimed he was giving me his "cost" price.

Is the radiator plastic?

Sometimes the area where the drain plug screws in cracks. I'm guessing here, but if the guy tried to open a stuck drain plug he may have cracked the housing. That could mean your radiator wasn't too healthy anyways. Sometimes it can be repaired with epoxy, but a shop would not do that. I'm curious as to the radiator you could have bought so much cheaper. Were they the same brands? I doubt it, and you get the quality you pay for. Most shops won't buy from the chain stores, for good reason.
