I went in for a Timing belt change cause of their attractive price of $169.99 with a coupon. Boy did I regret this. Before I entered the car, it was normal and quiet. After they replaced the timing belt, there was noise coming from the belt area. They said the cover was faulty, being misaligned for being too tight before (blames PEP boys for overtightening).
Fine, I spent on my own getting a new cover from a Ford Dealer and they installed it. To my surprise the exact same noise is still there! Complained again to them and this time they said the timing belt tensioner is broken. WTH, they said at first t'was the cover now they said it's the tensioner and they won't fix unless I pay. The car had no noise with the old cover & old tensioner and when they put their belt that's where the noise started.
Up to now my car still does the same noise every morning and whenever I hear that, I remember the lousy service Purrfect Auto gave me. I will never come back to this shop again, even if the service were free.

other brands like Toyota will just stop you where you are without any engine damage.
My 4 cyl Toy is about $300 for a timing belt every 75K, except when the water pump started to leak at 310K. Then a timing belt, water pump, etc. were $500. Not cheap either way.
Never an issue with the cover. Never any noises, either. So $170 for a timing belt would sound pretty good... if y'all pardon the expression.

It's a good idea to change the tensioner at the same time as the timing belt, along with the water pump and possibly the camshaft seals. They all wear out at the same rate, are all in the same area, and the labor will only be paid once instead of three times.
The labor is why they want more money, they have to take everything apart again. Why didn't they simply remove the cover to see if it stll made noise, before they changed out the cover? Shoddy workmanship to be sure, unless you insisted they do it that way.
#1 Consumer Suggestion
Take care of that noise.

Go somewhere else and have the noise resolved because if your timing belt fails, it will likely cause expensive damage to the engine.
A proper timing belt job should include a new tensioner and new water pump (if driven by the timing belt). The cost of these parts and the labor time required varies widely from car to car. Anyone who puts out a coupon quoting a flat price to replace the timing belt without specifying what kind of car it is is just trying to sucker people in.
