I was phoned and coaxed into buying magizine subscriptions. I was told that I would only have to pay for one subscription and the others were "Free". The cost was $39.90. Unfortunately they got my credit card number.

Upon recieving the invoice in the mail, I realized that I was being charged $39.90 X 24 payments for over $957. I called and cancelled the credit card immediately.

I then called the customer service number and tried to cancel. I was told that it could not be cancelled once it was ordered, and that I was under a "legally binding contract" because I was "recorded" agreeing to the order.

They have called several more times informing me that if I didn't make payments, I was going to be turned over to a collection agency.

Relieved of Liability

AUTHOR: Olean Victim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 10, 2009

Upon repeatedly being billed From Readers Service, I wrote CANCEL in bold letters accross the invoices & requested a full refund of the $39.90. And mailed them back.
I also filed a consumer complaint through my State Senator's office.
I recently recieved a letter from Readers Service basicaly cancelling the order and relieving me of liability of the balance. I have not recieved a refund.

If they have a recording at all - which is doubtful

Then the recording states what they told you - if they told you 1 flat fee not monthly payments and the rest were free it will be on that recording.

It may have been edited to appear that you agreed though - you have to request the court to have it checked for editing before admitting into evidence. I work in Telecom and the system administrator can make those edits.

I suggest you STOP DOING ANY BUSINESS WITH TELEMARKETERS AT ALL - it was probably a scam to begin with.

If you continue to do business with telemarketers - I suggest you find out your state's laws about recording phone calls. Some states do not require that you tell the other party you are recording - others require that you do.

You have to follow YOUR STATE laws or the recordings are not admissible in court
