I started at Regency Beauty Institute because I was impressed by the modern look and feel of the building. I liked the formal atmosphere. It was in a great location and I was able to get there easily every single day. I made some great friends there and the staff really seemed to know everyone because the school was so small.

But, my experience ended up being more negative than positive. Shortly after I started the hours changed from 20 to 24. I thought this would be a great opportunity to graduate faster, but soon found out that it just wore me out. Along with the full time hours on every Saturday, I just couldn't keep up with the schedule and remain healthy.

My kit and the school's equipment started breaking and no one seemed to care. Pipes would leak and the toilet was broken for over a month. You can only run 2 shampoo bowls at once without it effecting the water temperature and pressure. I lost my break many times because I had to wait to wash my mannequin head.

The rules changed every other week I was there. I started getting very confused and nothing was ever explained. Sometimes they would enforce the rules and sometimes they wouldn't. Some people were sent home for wearing the wrong thing and others were not. Randomly one day we were told we were not allowed to leave the building on our 15 minute breaks, even to get something to eat. We could only smoke. One teacher said it was because people were getting drunk and high at their cars and another said it was because they had to show an inspector every student at any given moment. Which explanation was the truth? I never found out.

Now I love makeup and I hate to use anything that is too old. Regency's makeup was very old, it was clearly past it's expiration date. Someone told us some of it had been there for over a year. It was very dusty and hard to work with. Most of the labels had come off. I didn't want to go near it.

The last straw came when the staff clearly started to play favorites. I was yelled at on several occasions because the staff had heard from someone else that I had said something. This was so unprofessional. A teacher randomly disappeared one day and we were told not to react to her disappearance. This wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been the assistant administrator and my favorite teacher. I was also frustrated by the fact that there was no financial aid advisors or anyone else on staff in our campus. They were all up in MN.

Although Regency has a few good qualities, they ARE one of the top 3 beauty schools in the nation (along with Aveda and Paul Mitchell), the cons highly outweigh the pros. If you want to go to beauty school, think twice about attending Regency. I've left the school and am now going elsewhere even though I owe Regency money, I don't care.

Protest time

AUTHOR: ws - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, September 13, 2010

Since Regency sees everyone as a dollar sign,I thinks its time to stage a good old fashioned protest.Picket signs and lawnchairs on the sidewalk might get the point across. They seem to be able to take our money for a horrible education and total disrespect towards the students, so maybe its time to see how many people we can warn before they are fooled by that school.Every new student we reach is 20,000 dollars out of their pockets.Could you imagine if you could even reach out to 5 students about to enroll!thats 120,000 out of their pockets. They may have screwed us but we have rights a U.S citizens always remember that.Everything this country and our rights were built on started with a good old fashioned protest.

I agree about Regency

I too was treated like crap by Regency. I too left because I couldn't stand how disrespectful the staff was. I went to the Champaign campus, too.

I was blamed for things that NEVER happened. Two girls got into a fight, it was my fault. To this day I have no idea exactly what happened, something happened off campus but the teachers wanted in on it. This was stupid.
I had trouble with parting in the beginning and even though I figured it out the teacher still wanted to fix my parts. It got to the point where my parts were better than her's.

They made the switch from 20-24 hours, I was very excited at first because this meant I could graduate a lot sooner. Little I know that I was about to be so tired I could barely stand up. I still don't understand why part timers had to be there for the full time hours on Saturday.
To this day I don't understand why they made stupid rules about using their cups for coffee and water. That makes no sense and I'm still scared to use public cups. This had crossed a line, and my anger at the school started. This would just be the beginning of my anger at the school.

few weeks past and nothing happened. Then they some more stupid rules. We got a 15 minute break. We couldn't even leave the building to get a snack, if we were hungry. too bad.

A teacher did vanish and I never did hear too much about why. The fact that we weren't allowed to react was crazy. This was around the time that I started looking at other schools. I finally made the decision to leave, I didn't care about my $5,165.00 bill.

Just today I began the process of leaving Regency behind for good. I talked to another school today and they said that that bill was crazy and was way too much, but at least my Regency days are behind me forever.

I also wanted to point out one more thing. I just had a ton of surgery and I would have had to take a medical leave. I'm not sure how nice they would have been about that. When I heal I will be going to a different Beauty School.

Dear Regency Victim

You may just want to cut your losses and quit now. At the rate you are going you are just going to keep losing more money. I'm sure they are going to try to keep you there as long as they can so they can milk you for all you are worth. Is it really worth it to stay there if you can't even live with your children? You will owe them a penalty fee for leaving but you can defer that due to economic hardship. The company that handles the bill is actually pretty nice if you communicate with them, nothing like RBI. I think one of the major problems with the company is that it is run by a banker, not a cosmetologist or someone passionate about beauty. I'm several months out of school now and even though I have this bill I don't care. I wasn't happy there and I am much more happy now.

another disgruntled student

AUTHOR: Regency Victim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 26, 2009

Wow I am so happy that I found this page, I am currently a student at Regency in St. Louis, Mehlville campus I have been attending since july 08, I would have been nearing my graduation but had an unfortunate accident back in Nov. 08 when I broke my hand and had to have surgery to pin my bones. I ended up having to take my full 42 days of leave (all that is allowed in Missouri). The day I broke my hand I had just finally reached my 520 hours to get my living expense loan check, The thing that really sucked for me was that I had to buy clothes and school supplies and gas and somehow pay my bills while attending 40 hours a week 8:30 to 5:00, I have 2 children and was already struggling before I started to make ends meet. I had dreamed of going to beauty school for 5 years and finally found regency on the internet and like most others I thought it looked pretty and seemed modern, and they offered federal financial aid.

The first thing that made me upset was the kit, in the handbook it clearly states that while they were out buying supplies for the campus they figured they would buy enough for the whole student body.....they would buy???(I assumed that would be coming out of my 18,000.00 tuition) Ok so Im attending and patiently awaiting my first loan check so I could pay some overdue bills and buy a couple pairs of black pants and shoes (for school). Come to find out that out of my first 1,800 $ disbersment they were taking 1500$ for my kit??? ok so the check came around 300 hours....for less than 300 dollars....what a bummer!! So Im struggling on waiting for the second check then I break my hand the day I hit the hour mark for my loan, so here I am on my medical leave waiting for 3 weeks to get my check I finally call only to find out that you dont get your check if your on a medical leave?? OK this is my money!! I am the one paying back the loan!! At this point rules and stuff were starting to seem a bit ridiculous..but I had already made the commitment and it felt to late to turn back now so I kept on dealing with it.

They have the most ridiculous 50 page handbook and apparently you are supposed to read memorize and follow every little tiny rule or be PUNISHED!!! Well before I started they were having a difficult time finding teachers we went through about 5 teachers and switched managers and assitant managers within the first 3 months I was attending. The rules seemed slightly relaxed certain things that were in the handbook were being overlooked eveything was very unorganized the manager was rarely to be found running around like a chicken with her head cut off, My advisor was switched 5 times and I would have to find them half the time to advise me about my progress. Come to find out it was really a mess a month or so before I started the students were being left for hours alone in the class because of the lack of teachers...basically teaching themselves (apparently there is a class action lawsuit about this).

When I came back from my medical leave suddenly they are cracking down on everything...our old teacher who became the assistant manager turned drill seargent...and was looking for anything and everything to send us home for....like the original complaint first made here somedays they followed the handbook somedays they didn't. There were certain special students who could come in daily wearing tennis shoes and yoga pants but one day I came in wearing a pair of black pants with rinestones on the pockets and I was told they looked like jeans...GO HOME!!! Hmmmm....well isnt that great because my attendance not being so great already due to my medical leave for 42 days now anytime my kids got sick or my electricity getting turned off or any personal problems were being counted against my attendance of which every percent under 90 you have to pay late fees 5$ an hour so if you graduate with 80% attendance you already owe them 800$ in late fees!!!! Things started really getting to me for one beauty school drama..I am 33 years old and I have 18 year olds picking fights with me or running to snitch on me for walking out to my car so they come find you and send you home. The sending home thing is already ridiculous, one semester at a University doesn't even cost this much and if I have to walk out to my car or grab a bite to eat on a break they surely wouldn't send me home. This morning I came to school I got there at 8:23 I pulled up and clocked in the time clock is set to clock you in at 8:30 even if you get there at 8:00...so I clock in with a few minutes to spare, we have roll call at 8:45 so everyone sits outside smoking wandering around etc.... until 8:45 on the clock. So I clocked in and decided to run directly across the street to McDonalds got a cup of coffee, came directly back and sat out back for 15 minutes waiting for rollcall with the other students. I go inside and sit down in the class for another 8 minutes or so when I get my name called and they said come to the office. I go in and the manager, assistant manager and 2 teachers all start giving me the 3rd degree....."what time did you clock in??" "who clocked you in??" I said I did...."then where did you go?" I said I went to get a cup of coffee..."well you know you cant leave the campus after your clocked in.....so now you have to go home for the rest of the day!!!!" Im like come on....I am trying so hard to get here and maintain my attendance I literally would come there bleeding if I had to just to make sure they don't screw me out of any more money and now Im being sent home again over a cup of coffee??? This is my money I am paying!! Im paying their salary...the money I am already paying in tuition and now late fees could have bought my children a small house or a nice down payment on a large house!!! I am already suffering with my electric and gas and water being shut off my kids are displaced one staying with her dad the other with his grandma..Im staying with my mom and I am so tired of the place and the lame rules that they enforce when they feel like picking on someone.....but I still got up and used my last bit of money for my gas and my coffee- breakfast and drug myself to the place trying to get my hours and my attendance....only to get sent home to owe more money????

Like the original complaint I also notice alot of other inconsistancys and things that are not right. 2 days ago our airconditioning was out during a heat advisory but we were not allowed to leave or take extra breaks to cool off. Over the winter our hot water heater broke and we had to shampoo clients with cold water for almost a week!! We constantly run out of supplies, toilet tissue, paper towels...I used the bathroom several times washed my hands then had to walk all over the school looking in every paper towel holder and never found one!! How is it that we cant keep orange wood sticks for manicures? but we have paying clients coming in and on top of every students tuition they still cant afford coffee creamer or tissue or orange wood sticks? I also was interested in pursuing a career as a make-up artist and since I started a year ago we have had the same nasty stinky make-up...the base smells like rancid oil, the powder is dusty on top we have no black eyeliner or mascara....and they have never replaced anything...and we are supposed to use that on our clients? In order to complete your mid-term practical you have to have or recruit someone to come in and pay for a facial and a makeup application to get the grade...I cant think of anyone I would ask to come in and pay for that!! I would have to tell them to bring thier own makeup...and then pay??

Ok I know this is getting long but Im still not finished, what about the times we have a client from 10:30 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon, we are not getting paid...but regency is....we have to skip lunch and work right through and let them catch you walking away while your clients color is processing for 45 minutes...your starving and you still cant clock out for lunch or even take a 15 minute break!!! and then since you had a client if you didnt take your morning break you loose it all together!! There has been a few times that our assistant manager comes over and tries to get you an "add on" by suggesting 3 more services to your client at 3 in the afternoon.....after you have already had them in your chair for 3 hours....you'r still not getting paid and now you have to stay to 5:30 but the clock automatically clocks you off at 5....so now you stayed late and made regency even more money, you might not get a tip....especially when your rude assistant manager makes the client run up to pay...with a towel still on her head before you can finish blow drying her...because the teachers are ready to go home so they want the client to run up and pay so they can count down the drawer and go.....(this actually happened and my client was so pissed she argued with the a*s. manager everything was going fine...and there went my tip after a 5 hour service of which i stayed late) They are the ones getting paid Im not even getting hours or a tip now....shouldn't they have let me finish up my service and then had her come up and pay so I could pack my things and go home???????? They dont care about us its all about money......they want you to advertise they have us going door to door with flyers and cards to bring them in clients with the hopes that you can make master or student designer if you bring in a certain amount of clients...I don't care they can keep their stupid little prizes because I have not and will not refer anyone to the school and give them another dime!!!! The owner of Regency is hiding somewhere in a mansion in Minnesota racking up the cash...while I struggle my butt off running around with my belongings in my trunk so I can be sure to have the right pants on so I don't get sent home...to my house with no gas electricity or water, I feel like screaming sometimes I hate the place and I wish I would have known it was going to be this difficult before I got past 750 hours becuase now I cant even quit or transfer schools or I will loose all my money!!!!!! At this point all I want to do is finish up this last 500 hours and get the heck out of there but they wont even let me!! As it is I now have over 2000$ in late fees and every day they send me home they make another 40$ off me and they expect me to bring in clients and push retail so they can get even more money??? I would definately consider another older school if I could do it all over again....I would sit in a dirty basement school and save my money get my education then go work in a pretty salon!! Dont let the internet pictures fool you, its a modern cool looking school but its very unorganized very unfair and very expensive!! and the only reason it looks nicer than the older schools is because they are making millions of dollars ripping off students!!!

Happy in Elgin

AUTHOR: Lisa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 09, 2009

Well anyone looking at this who is considering the Regency Beauty Institute in Elgin, Illinois can rest assure that it is run quite well. My daughter is a student there. The manager, Donna, is a lovely lady that seems to be running that school quite efficiently. I have heard nothing but praises from my daughter when it comes to her instructors and she seems to be progressing very quickly.

The salon is spotless and everything is in working order. (However, it is quite new). I felt the kit they started with was a little pricey, but considering the sheer amount of tools and supplies they need, I don't feel any more ripped off than when my other child in a university tells me she needs a hundred dollars for a soft cover textbook. School is expensive. That is no secret. I didn't expect this to be any different.

The hours are long, but it is no more intensive than going to college for any degree full time. I am told that they have a 100% pass rate for state boards. That is the bottom line and the girls appear to be having a good time. I went in for a cut, myself, a found it to be a pleasant and constructive learning atmosphere.
