Last year my boyfriend started getting collection notices out of the blue from one collection agency after another about a bogus debt from 12 years ago (supposedly a sprint bill from when he was a minor - hes puzzled).
We filed with the BBB for each and every notice that has come in and they all dropped it immediately and returned the debt to the holder - Resurgent Capital Services.
We are now getting letters from Resurgent demanding payment on this debt and stating that its a real debt (a response to a BBB complaint we filed against them this time). I'm annoyed with this nonsense and want it to stop.
My boyfriend has checked and it is not on his credit report and he thinks we should just ignore it since its obviously a fraud. I dont know if thats the right course of action? We've filed with various BBB's before.. should we do more. Or is ignoring this obvious bullsh** the way to go. I really don't want to waste anymore of our time on this if i dont have to.
Is there a specific course of action we can take to make this paper trail of nonsense end?
Please advise. Thanks!

You need to get the paper trail to stop. If you ignore them, then they consider it a valid debt and will continue with their paper trails. I have the same issue and am currently winning the battle..... File with the BBB in Greenville against Resurgent, file with the SC attorney general, your states atty general and the FTC. Otherwise, they may just find another "debt" that you owe.....

""Is there a specific course of action we can take to make this paper trail of nonsense end?""
There is no we in this matter!
This is your boyfriend's business, so I don't understand what you're getting upset about. It's his MAIL, his business-not yours.
Your boyfriend should send a certified, return receipt requested letter to them that clearly states his age and birthdate and explain that this is not his debt. If he was a minor when this debt was established, he should point out to them that a minor cannot lawfully enter into a contract and that they should stop contacting him any further about this debt. He should also remind them that if they SELL this debt to another entity, they will have knowingly sold a bogus debt.
