I went in to the Suwanee, GA location of Rock Tops, Inc. on June 29, 2008, the week that they opened. At this time we worked with a salesperson, Jason Wester on the details and decision on which granite we were choosing. In order to complete the order, the manager Mike joined our conversation. To close the deal' he gave us a very good price on an already promotional product.

The details of the order and conversation is as follows:

-We chose the New Paladonia (Acretiaba) which was listed at $45 per square foot, to include all edging and a sink.

-The agreed price was marked down from $45/sf to $36.78/sf. The manager Mike said that he would take off 20% to complete the deal. My partner told him that 20% would be $36 not $36.78. However, we agreed on the $36.78/sf, which included the full nose and nose on this kitchen counter top and both sides of the bar top. The price also included the 60/40 sink.

There was much discussion on the actual square footage. We came in with an estimated measurement and total of 41.69 sf. Originally we were going to include a backsplash which added 4 sf, bringing the total to 45.69 sf. However, Mike, the manager, kept saying our measurements were off and it was 51 sf. Therefore, Mike assured us that we would move forward on the high number and if the square footage was less than we would be credited the difference.

-This brought us to the decision of $2031.88 for the total charges, and $1,015.95 for the deposit.
oThe number was broken down by:
$36.78/sf as our promotional price
$139 charge for fuel
51.46 sf (based on Mike's measurements)
-When the measurement gentleman came in July 14, 2008, we decided not to do a backsplash. Therefore, automatically removing 4 sf from the original measurement. When we asked what the total square footage was, to confirm our final price we were told that he did not do that part of the formula.

On August 27, 2008, their employee Alex, came in to install the granite countertops. The other day we noticed that the sink is not properly sealed and leaking through to the cabinet. This brought us to finally call in to talk to someone about the money that is due back to us along with the sink needing to be fixed.

During the conversation with Mike, the local manager, on September 19, 2008 Mike told my partner that he would not credit her back any of the money for the difference in the square footage. He said that our price was based on $43.30/sf, and the original square footage was estimated at 46sf and that he installed 45.2sf. He said that the contract was agreed upon at $2,031.88, so that price must have been okay with you at that time. No, I do not owe you any money.

Here is the problem:
-Mike claims he never agreed to a price of $36.78
-Mike claims he only charged for 46sf
-Mike claims that he never had the conversation, that any overage on the original calculations would be credited back.
-Mike's new numbers do not calculate to what was charged?! If he charged us the $43.30/sf at 46sf (plus the $139 fuel charge) then we would have owed $2,130.80 not $2,031.88.
-Mike also claims that he charged us a cutting out fee for the sink which was never spoken about or listed on the contract. Yet, he says that he did not charge the delivery fee.

This Rock Tops and Mike are are like a sleezy car dealership. They manipulate the contract, to not include enough information that they think they can get away with telling lies. Spend the few extra dollars to work with a reputable company - it is not worth the hassle!!!! Because most likely, if you work with Mike - you will not walk away with the price that you think you are!

When Corporate got involved - it was resolved.

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)

I sent a complaint to corporate and it was very quickly resolved. They gave me back my credit without further discussion.

It is my understanding that Rock Tops as a whole is a good company and easy to work with. The crew that came out to install the countertops were great - they did good work and were very nice. Just beware if you are in a store with Mike as a manager. If he is involved in your contract, make sure that everything is in order and documented from your verbal agreement.
