In January of last year I sent Rodale a very specific letter requesting for them to remove me from all e-mail and address lists. Unfortunately, this strategy, recommended in their own materials, resulted in no change. On December 30, 2008 I received another 2 books and again I am forced to pay the shipping costs to return these unsolicited materials. This is outrageous. My wife gave me a subscription to Men's Health 2 or 3 years ago as a present. Since that time I have been continually harassed by this company. I do not want my credit damaged so I dutifully return the books, but this is getting to be ridiculous. I want them to stop this practice, but not only for me. I want them to stop this practice altogether.
I would like to give you an itinerary of this company's practices:
December 2006-- My wife purchases a subscription to Men's Health along with a promotional book. Apparently, this made her or me a "member" and we are forevermore locked in annually to receive their books.
December 2007--Rodale sends me two books. I return them with a letter asking them to remove me from any and all contact. I pay the shipping to return their material.
December 29, 2008--Rodale again sends me two books. With the books there is no way possible to return them with the information provided in the "pack slip".
January 12, 2009--I receive an "invoice" for the books in question stating that I have until January 19, 2009 to return the books "by the end of the 21-day preview." So, now they have essentially given me less than one week to return the books because I did not have the proper information earlier to send them back.
I want this practice to stop. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau about this company and am in the process of filing a formal complaint. I'm thinking of calling my Congressperson as well. I can't believe this business practice is legal.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Return them unopened

When you receive the books, don't open the box. You can refuse the delivery if the boxes aren't open. That way you can send them back at Rodale's expense, not yours. Just take them back to the post office, or give them to your mail carrier marked as refused.
