Ok. I signed up to Roommates.com. I signed up for the free account. I live 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean! I had a lovely ad for a roommate! I received considerable amount of responses! However, I thought it odd, that once I would reply to a response, then I would never hear back again from the person! So I contacted them, they don't even bother to actually read ur complaint. They just automatically send u an email assuming they know what the problem is! So this was were my Red Flags started going up! I had to explain (like u would to a little kid!) to them,that they weren't understanding. I actually had to insult them to get them to actually read, my email complaints! Finally , (after multiple emails ) someone finally read itand responded appropriately! However they never fixed the problem! They then refused to send me copies of my emails that had been (they claimed ) forwarded to potential roommates! My Radar was running super hot now with my Red Flags! Bells andWWhistles firing off like it was the 4th of July! So I waited, the email responses of inquiry to my post stopped virtually! Went from about 4 or 5 a day to 2, since I complained 3 weeks ago or so.
Then today I get a notice that I finally have a response (supposedly)to one of my return emails,introducing myself to a potential roommate! I go to my account an log in! Then, click on his response! What do I get! A "this email is locked " message because I have to guess what? That's right, you guessed it! You have to Upgrade and pay money to read ur email !! They don't tell you that anywhere during ur sign up for ur free account! !!! So they try and force you to pay money and upgrade thru holding ur email responses hostage and not allow you to read them, w/o paying money first! This site is a waste of time, beware don't give them any of ur money !!!!!

I am sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with Roommates.com as well as the fact that you feel misled by the website with regard to the upgraded memberships. Please understand that is not our intention.
A Roommates.com Basic Membership is free. As a basic member you can add a profile, browse your matches and send RoomMail messages all for free. As a Choice Member, you can open emails, view larger photos, maps, and the comments sections of other member's profiles
When you go to the Roommates.com website under the More Info tab, you will find the Frequently Asked Questions page. On this page you will find information on how the site works with the free membership and the upgraded membership, along with the membership cost options. We encourage you to send out messages to your matches. Most members will upgrade so they can communicate directly with their potential roommate.
When we started this service, we designed the site so that people are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways are to send contact information within messages to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read Roommates.com emails that you receive, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.
You are able to see all your Sent messages by logging into your account, click on the Mail Center tab at the top of the page and then click Sent Items.
We would be happy to give you a free upgrade if you would like to try to the site again.
