I attempted to purchase a new plan, the credit union agent for Route 66 confirmed coverage, stating that I was “locked in” and that the company actually issued a Service Agreement. Shortly thereafter, I was advised that the Service Agreement was cancelled, without any prior notice and after my payment for the entire premium had been paid and accepted. The premium was eventually refunded and I was not reimbursed for lost interest that would have accrued on that amount. Although I was able to purchase another plan through a competitor, that coverage did not become effective immediately. I asked the credit union agent and Route 66 for an extension on the original plan for a prorated premium and both ignored the request. Fortunately for me, the new plan is now effective. Here is my caution message to you. First, beware that you could have your coverage revoked without notice, even though the selling agent promised coverage and you had paid the premium in full. It is noteworthy that had I sustained an otherwise covered loss before my new plan took effect, I would have sued the company in Virginia General District Court for recovery and I believe that I would have prevailed. Further and very significantly, Route 66 sets a liability limit for what they determine to be the value of the automobile which is the subject of the plan. This is especially significant for those desiring to cover an older vehicle, regardless of its condition. In my case, their estimate of value is an unmitigated joke. This means that despite the mechanical condition of the car, which in my case was never in dispute, Route 66 can, when considering a claim; declare the car to be a “total loss”, limiting “coverage” to the amount of premium paid. In my opinion, for some, that is effectively no coverage at all. The plan I eventually purchased sets an actual liability limit that is not affected by the value of the car, unless the car’s value exceeds the stated liability limit – very positive. In my prior message, I reported that I asked the Office of Attorney General to investigate the practices of this company to see how pervasive this practice is in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as there have been other social media complaints. WORD TO THE WISE - BE VERY CAREFUL.
