I recently applied for a veterinary receptionist position that I found on Craig's List. I sent an email with my resume attached. I received a response email from Claire Bloomberg at Rowe-Recruitment and Partners in which she stated that I was a qualified candidate for the position. I was instructed that in order to have an interview I had to answer a pre-interview questionnaire on the Rowe web site. I answered the questionnaire at the end of which I was asked to complete a credit report  in lieu of a back ground check. There was a link that took me directly to Experian where I filled out the information for the credit report.

In the initial email from Claire Bloomberg and in the pre-interview questionnaire i was told that I was one of the top five candidates for the position and that I would hear something back within 72 hours. When I did not hear back I tried to go to the Rowe Recruiters and Partners web site but it was no longer in existence. I also could not find the ad on Craig's List anymore. It all just disappeared. Also, I had opted not to pay for any of the extras on Experian but one week later I was charged $14.95. I immediately called Experian and canceled the membership.

This is such a scam and one that really worried me. The connection to the credit report worried me that my identity had been compromised or stolen. I contacted Life Lock and made sure that they were aware of the situation.

Update on this Craig's List scam

AUTHOR: cctjameson - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, November 14, 2011

This morning I found a job for a Front Office Coordinator on Craig's List in Fort Collins, CO. The ad was fairly vague:
"The right person for us would be team oriented, open-minded about new
techniques and ideas, committed to continued education, efficient, well
organized and comfortable with change. We believe in giving our guests
the best possible care and need someone who shares that philosophy."
I emailed asking for more information.
The response I got was word for word the same response I got for the veterinarian's assistant ad that I had applied for in Oct and reported here.
This is the response:
"Hello Catherine,

We would like to thank you for sending your resume to Baker Careers
& Partners.  After reviewing your initial credentials, I think you
could possibly be a great fit for our company.

Our Human Resource manager would like to schedule an interview with you
before she leaves for vacation early next week. You need to complete the
pre-interview screening before we can schedule an interview, which can
be found at http://workforbaker.info  or the career link on our homepage. Your applicant code is 031085.

Please write down your code, as that is the only way you can gain access
to your application and employee profile. Once you complete your
screening someone from HR will contact you within 72 hours to schedule
an interview.

Respectfully

Helen Fratt
Baker Careers & Partners"

I immediately looked up Baker Careers & Partners and lo and behold it was the same web site that Rowe-Recruitment used. What a coincidence? Not at all.
Beware of these scams!!! Do NOT go to the site and fill out the information or do the credit check that they request as a "background check" at the end of the application.

Unfortunately, this scam is becoming more and more common.  Keep an eye on your credit report for a while.

No reputable company will have you procure your credit report as a basis for employment.  If they want it to run a background check, they do it themselves.  This is not uncommon in businesses where the employee will be handling money or sensitive information.
