I was contacted this morning from a company known as Sonic Cash Net. This lady had a very thick Indian accent and was acusing me of obtaining a payday loan from them and not paying it back. I could not understand anything else very well but she did say someone would come and serve me with papers and take me in front of a judge in the morning if this was not paid. I told her I could not understand her and I had no idea what she was talking about so she put me on with her supervisor. He also had an accent and was hard to understand. He informed me that if this case was taken to court I could owe as much as five thousand dollars, so I of course asked how this could be settled. He told me to hold and he would discuss my case with his supervisor and let me know. He then proceeded to explain that I had to send them five hundred dollars to keep this from going to the next step. I told him I did not have five hundred dollars and he asked me when I would have the money. I told him possibly by Thursday. He told me to write two letters one appologizing to the company for not paying back the money I owed and the other one saying that I would send five hundred dollars with a pre-paid debit card on Thursday. I had to have the second letter notarized and then fax them both to a number he provided me with. I immediately googled this company because I had never heard of them and found the same story from several different people. I believe the woman also asked me how I would protect my children, but I could barely understand her so I think that is what she said. Well anyway they are not getting any of my money and don't let them scam you either.

There's A Deeper Problem Here...

These people have enough of your personal information to be harmful.
How they obtained it, I have my suspicions, but you need to protect yourself.
I would absolutely begin by closing your current bank account and opening up another one immediately. That will protect your money.
I would inform the three credit reporting agencies that your personal identity has been compromised and that you want alerts posted to head off the possibility of someone using your name, employer information, and whatever else they may have at their disposal to obtain credit in your name. They may well have your Social Security Number.
Always take note of the fact as to whether the name of a business or a phone number appears on your caller ID. Unidentified numbers or businesses are likely hidden to prevent you in knowing where the call is coming from, and therefore makes reporting scam artists to authorities rather impossible. It will be a fine day in America when all the cell phone providers jump on the anonymous caller rejection bandwagon.
Never pay anyone over the phone a dime, unless you initiate the call from your own phone and know for CERTAIN that you are speaking to someone who works for the company you intend to pay. Never pay a bill collector over the phone. In fact, I generally advise people to tell third party collectors to pounce salt. You have no proof whatsoever that any money you transfer to them ever reaches anyone who will credit your account with the original party that you owed the debt to.
This case exposes the fact that unsolicited calls can come from anywhere, and by anyone who may have just enough information to make the call sound credible. Scammers can even convince people who might be forgetful from time to time, that they overlooked a payment while a customer of a business. A legitimate business can easily hire someone who has criminal tendencies. Criminals can copy account and other personal information from filed records and use them in scams while away from work or after they move on to other jobs.
Brick and mortar Payday loan institutions are traditionally not very secure, and your personal information supplied to them when applying for a loan is usually accessible by every employee who works for the business. These are unregulated institutions that do not protect your information from prying eyes. I'm betting my right arm that your information was compromised by someone who worked for one of these businesses that both of you may have patronized in the past. If you ever used an online loan institution, then heaven help you. Your information could have been sold a hundred times to scammers and identity thieves.
Never be intimidated by anyone on the phone who threatens to have you "picked up and taken in front of a judge in a few minutes" if you don't pay up. Hopefully, most people are keenly aware that our system of justice does not work like that, that such threats are totally baseless...not to mention that they are illegal as well.
Deflect the conversation immediately by informing the caller that you will be happy to pay anything you owe, just as soon as they mail a detailed bill explaining the debt and to whom it was owed, to the home address that they should have in front of them. That way you can research the debt claim to YOUR satisfaction. Inform the person that no amount of persuasion will make you pay them a dime over the phone.
Chances are, they will hang up on you.
Oh...and don't give them your home address either. Tell them that since they have threatened to have you arrested, and that someone is on the way to do it (if they have by this point made this silly threat), then they MUST know what your correct address happens to be at the moment.
Then YOU hang up the phone.

I am just amazed at these people! They called me yesterday with a similar scheme but they didn't get that far with me because I argued them DOWN! I am the arguing QUEEN and I expect people to come correct with their information if they want to battle with me and apparently these people did not have their stuff together prior to dialing my number! Alex called with a heavy accent from 941-961-8518 yesterday stating that he was calling from the Crime Division of the Law Office of Sonic Cash Net and I was being charged with taking a loan in 2008 and not paying it back. He also asked was I still with the credit union. So immediately that set off a red flag because I just opened up my first credit union account in January of 2009 so I knew something automatically didn't add up. But I decided to see what he was going to say anyway. So I asked when did the funds supposedly get deposited into my credit union account. He said in the month of May 2008. I asked for a specific date and he could not provide me with that information. Then he asks me if I am still at my address and employer and he recited the info to me. I threw him for another loop when I replied "no". He apparently thought he had my most recent info and to his lack of knowledge I have relocated to a whole different state. So I asked for a phone number for Sonic Cash and he said he could not give me a number for his client! So I asked how much the alleged loan was for and he told me $300 but after all the fees and affidavit charges it was a total of $1095. So I asked to speak to his supervisor which he refused at first. I demanded he put me on the phone with his supervisor and then he puts Jacob on the phone. I proceed to tell Jacob how full of it his company is and that I was going to call the police and report them for scamming people. He said that the legal officers were already on their way to my house to deliver the documents for me to go to court about this loan. I told him it was impossible for me to have taken any loan from this company because the bank account that they claim they put money into never existed in 2008. He froze up and said "I will call you back in 30 minutes, I need to research this information" and then he immediately hung up! I never heard back from them. Their number called me early this morning but the phone only rang once so maybe they got the hint. Please do not fall victim to these people and whatever scam they have going!
