I bought a top of the line Sony WEGA 42" LCD TV late 2004 at a cost of about $2200. Also purchased a full Sony home theatre system and the stand with a 2 yr extended warranty - total cost was better than $3700, all of which was registered with Sony, Circuit City and third party extended warranty co.
I have always owned Sony products - my last television lasted 20+ years, but this piece of junk isnt worth the cost to throw it away. about 18 months ago the TV started showing blue spots / lines. not too bad, but getting progressively worse. When I called Sony tech line last year, they told me the bulb probably just needed to be replaced - so for $200, I thought Id just wait until it went out. Today I called a TV Repair shop to order a bulb and explained the problem - he knew EXACTLY what it was and told me about the Optic Block issues Sony has had with this unit for YEARS and recommended that I call Sony about the warranty.
So I spent the better part of the morning on the phone with Sony, who finally informed me that the warranty ended on 12/31/08 and so sorry, but I would need to pay for these repairs myself - cost to fix local is about $1100.00, cost just to buy replacement part from Sony is $1895.00 !!!!
My Issue / question is why wasn't I notified about the recall / issue when i called the first time OR as a registered owner of the defective unit? I wonder how many units they got away from having to repair?
Poor customer service for something so expensive and then they try and pork you for new parts - This is one person who will never buy another Sony product again.

Was there a recall done on the part?
and you should have called in a warranty fix at the first sign of problems. They told you "it was probably the bulb" but they had no way of knowing without looking. You should have insisted on a fix then.
Anyways, this is getting to be a problem with all modern televison manufacturers, just browse through this site. It looks as if TV ARE only built to last a few years anymore.
