*UPDATE Employee: Digital Scale - Response from Stamps.com
They say they are giving you a free scale when you sign up for their service. Their trial period service does NOT explain that the digital scale in just junk if you don't keep their service. $9.99 for shipping and handling is a lot of money to some people and the scale is of no use after the trial. They should NOT be able to be affiliated with the United States Postal Service. They are scammers and they know it. AT LEAST MAKE THEM EXPLAIN THAT THE SCALE IS OF NO USE WITHOUT THE SERVICE.

STAMPS.COM Scammers, robbers, use USPS as their partners in crime

USPS does not participate in any "crimes" with stamps.com. Stamps.com has to pay for the postage they sale. Just like Food Lion or other places that offer stamps, they have to pay for the postage they offer the public as a convenience.
Please do not include USPS in any statements like this as 99% of us who work there are honest people with families trying to make a living like the "regular joe q public". We aren't out to rip anyone off. If anything we are being ripped off by having to fully fund preretirement accounts for all employees. That is why you keep hearing things on the news about the postal service being "broke". NO other company has to pre fund their employees retirement accounts at all. But the post office is not involved in any illegal activity to rip anyone off.
Thanks,
Lydia

I filed a complaint against STAMPS.COM because I was told by them @ their 1-888-434-0055 (found on the bottom of the unit), that there was no way possible to use the 5lb digital scale without continuing to subscribe to their service.
After much research and many failures, I filed the complaint. Now that they informed me here on this Ripoff Report site that the scale can be used, I finally found a way to use it. I am willing to retract my complaint. It would be a nice gesture to NOT misinform people when they call that 800 # on the bottom of the unit.
Thanks and no hard feelings on this end. Jackie Ross

Digital Scale - Response from Stamps.com

Hi rippygirl,
Stamps.com would like to thank you for your comment and apologize for any misunderstanding your have regarding our promotional scale offered at registration.
Our 5 lb. digital scale integrates directly with a PC or Mac via an included USB cable and allows you to evaluate the Stamps.com service during and after the 4 week trial period with an open Stamps.com account.
While the scale does not have a screen that shows weight (the actual weight is shown in the Stamps.com software), there are many generic scale drivers available online for free that will allow your Stamps.com scale to work with many other types of software. You can find these scale drivers by typing in "stamps.com scale driver" in Google. Also, the scale will continue to show accurate weight inside the Stamps.com software with a closed Stamps.com account.
We would be happy to review your account and contact you personally to address your concerns. Could you please e-mail your account information to social@stamps.com?
We do appreciate your feedback and we apologize again for any inconvenience you experienced.
Sincerely,
Vince Y.
