AVOID. Starving Students is a horrible moving company.  We used them to move items from storage to our new house.  Here are just a few of the problems we encountered:  Horrible customer service; Requested 3 movers, only 2 showed; Slow movers; Broke a glass table; Incorrect time calculations; Overcharged.  After the end of the day, we disagreed with the time notations on the invoice, but the movers argued with us and would not leave until we signed the invoice so they could charge us the incorrect amount.

When we brought these issues to the attention of the head of their customer service/claims department, Ms. Thompson did not care and did nothing to resolve any of our concerns.  It took me seven requests via email before I was granted the privilege of a phone conversation.  All that Starving Students offered after countless emails and numerous requests was $24 for the broken table that originally cost several hundred dollars.  They would not even adjust the time to the correct calculations.  In sum, we requested reimbursement, and they would not refund a dime.

We ended up using other movers (Aussie Movers) for another move later in the month.  They were amazing--careful, efficient, professional, and competitively.  I highly recommend them.  Also, they did not charge the ridiculous surcharges that Starving Students does, such as the 22% fee over the hourly rate and double-time for drive time.  I have since learned that these bogus surcharges are unnecessary and not standard in the industry.  All other moving companies I have spoken to after the horrible Starving Students experience does not charge these additional fees.

The terrible customer service and dubious business practices of Starving Students are forcing me to go to small claims court to recover what the company owes me.

 DO NOT USE STARVING STUDENTS.

The idea of this company begun by two guys who wanted to keep costs down for people moving has gone so wrong.

We did not research enough online about them and moved from one part of Los Angeles to another part about 15-20 miles away.

We did not take the extra insurance for several hundred and precious items, a dining table damaged with deep grooves and the chairs to this set as well. They did not care to wrap them correctly. Left a whole roll of shrink wrap at the apartment they did not use that I kept to this day.

Two guys not three came and they took breaks to visit a girlfriend or some woman in the parking lot of the apartment building where we were moving from. They marked up the mattress because again not shrink wrapped correctly.

The owners, the customer service people must all hate their jobs having to lie and make excuses to customers who are ripped off, stolen from and have their property damaged.

We found out later online that these movers are often hired off the streets with no experience or traning. Who knows who they are and where they come from, so no wonder you get criminals that will steal.

They also left in a hurry and left about a car load of smaller items, they were done and did not care what we wanted. My boyfriend and I made a huge mistake hiring this company and these guys seems like maybe just out jail. These guys were scary and who wants to call the company and call off the move on moving day? No one expects anyone just off the streets or out of jail to be the people hired by a company to come to your house and move you for hundreds, thousands of dollars.

They were also a couple hours late. We moved from the San Diego area with a great company, called Priorty Moving Company that sadly did not service within LA and from a just okay company from the east coast. That company stole a vintage bike from my boyfriend and it took months of letters, faxes to get his money, but the bike could not be replaced. There we had insurance or else they would have lied about the bike and not paid a cent.

I think the thing to do is find a company when moving and research the hell out of them online. Ask friends and family for companies they have used. Buy the insurance and act tough with the movers like you will not take any crap from them. Exactly like how we have to put up our guard when going to buy a home or car.

I did think to take all private important papers and jewelry in my car and not pack them up for these guys. If this company wanted to it could clean up it's act and hire, train movers correctly and pay them a decent wage and offer benefits to keep them. My mother moved here from the east to join us with Bekin and they were great, they were amazing like the other company in San Diego. Maybe if enough posts are posted here and other places this company will clean up it's act. In the meantime hire someone one else, research them like nuts and behave tough when making the plans with the customer reps and with the actual movers. If we seem a little tough and very particular we might seem difficult enough that they do not want to mess with you and steal, damage and piss you off.
