I was enrolled in Summer 2018 quarter at Strayer online.  I had enrolled in Accounting 101.  I was assured  by my advisor that there are so many tools and people including himself that would support me if I had any questions or concerns.  The first couple of weeks were fine.  I was teaching myself the course and I thought that was just how online courses are suppose to be at Strayer.

Then, I saw a commercial where Strayer advertised that they were available tutors 24 hours a day.  I did not think anything of it because I had an A in the course.  I got sick and fell behind on just ONE assignment. My professor dropped me two letter grades. I spent the rest of the quarter fighting to just maintain a C.

In each assignment we were supplied many links to assist with our homework. These links consist of OTHER professors teaching Accounting 101 on YouTube.com.  I found it baffling that a college course professor would refer you to other professors online to teach her course.  Week after week, the assignments became increasingly daunting. Every time I would try my best, it would still be graded as a C.

The quizzes that I would ace were not as heavily weighted as going into another system that would tally how long you did your homework and what problems you were working on. There were problems that would take up to an hour to resolve and the system would only count how many problems that you finished not if you were stuck on a problem on one page.  The problems that were given sometimes took 2 to 3 pages of writing to get to the answer.

I would constantly email my professor for help and she kept giving me these canned responses. It was not a better way to do the problem. It was as if she copied and pasted the answers in her email responses straight from the book.  Then, I would try to reach out to their online tutors and that was a crap shoot.  One time you would get a really knowledgeable tutor the next time was terrible. When I tried to get back to the good tutors, they had bankers hours.  I work from 11am to 8pm Monday through Friday.

With being a single mother of three kids, a full time job, and this course; it really challenged me to mange my time.  Even though I made every opportunity to get assistance, the quality of the assistance was either inconsistent or non-existent.  I ended up many nights teaching myself accounting. I felt like, "Why the hell do I need to pay $1583.00 for a course where I am teaching myself?"

I even tried to reach out to my success coach which Strayer has advertised that they check on you throughout the course and are like your online advisors or support. I would email the success coach and there was no answer. Out of the blue, I get a call from a tutor that is another professor wanting to help me.  I told this professor via voicemail that I am available on Thursday at 9 a.m. That Thursday came and went which left me yet again to figure out the answers on my own. This same professor leaves me a voicemail Sunday night. By this time, I have already reached out to an online tutor, which was a waste of my time.

Feeling desperate, I am watching YouTube.com to understand my problems. I even applied for more consistent tutors via coursehero.com.  However, they wanted $15.00 per month. They would offer course examples for free, but after that you had  to pay. I have only heard of student aids not professors teaching courses at REAL universities like Georgia State University.

Strayer advertises that their classes are smaller so that they can offer more one-on-one support. Strayer also advertised that because it was online, you could have more of a work-life balance. These statements are false.  I never felt more stressed out and alone than I did taking this course and going to Strayer.
