Sylvan is a scam just after your money without truly caring about the children that they claim to wanting to be there to help.

Our daughter is getting ready to start the seventh grade and we took her to Sylvan to be tested. We wanted to make sure that she was reading and writing at a seventh grade level so that she would be on a level playing field in middle school.

Sylvan tested her with the California Achievement Test and claimed she scored in a 3.5 level for reading and a 4.3 level for math. We took her to a highly recognized psychologist in the area who used the same test plus an IQ test to baseline the results on first. My daughter tested at a 7.1 for reading and a 6.9 Math.

Sylvan does not do IQ testing before the testing. All good psychologists who do testing on children for learning problems do an IQ test first. An IQ test is necessary because if a child falls 20% lower in an area than their IQ score than you know they may have a learning problem or where to start the tutoring.

We called Sylvan after we got the results from the psychologist and the director hemmed and hawed about it, told us the psychologist didn't know what she was talking about even though she has 40 years of experience, then said he wasn't going to talk about this any further and hung up on us!

If we would have taken Sylvan advice without getting our daughter tested further we would be paying for individual lessons that aren't individualized (2-3 kids in a group) upwards of $6000.00 dollars. They were recommending 400 hours of instruction!!!

Do not go to Sylvan!
