Sylvan Learning Center : Dishonest, Expensive Babysitter; San Antonio, Texas

I am the "tasteless" director this poster speaks of.  Unfortunately, when this client's ex-husband wanted her to pay for her half of her child's tuition she wrote a check that bounced.  When I called her about the returned check, she assured me that she would be in to pay cash.  She never came.  She never expressed concerns regarding her child's progress.  She was happy as long as she did not have to pay for her daughter's tutoring.  This woman wrote us a bad check and then skipped town.   I was able to speak to her once she moved out of state because her ex-husband gave me her new phone number- he knew it was dishonest for her to write a bad check and he felt guilty.  When I spoke to the client in her new state she asked that I send her documentation for the hours that her daughter attended.  I did that, but then her current husband was refusing to pay.  I still have a copy of the returned check as proof.  In my opinion, this lady is just trying to get out of paying a bill.

Sylvan reading instruction does not consist of teachers reading to students.  It is a customized lesson plan based on the weaknesses of the child's skills in the areas of fluency (phonics, sight words), vocabulary and comprehension.  Students do not work on homework unless that parent specifically asks for that service.  This mother is making claims when she never once observed Sylvan instruction- which all parents are welcome to do.  Furthermore, no guarantee was broken with this client.
