I bid and won a vehicle auctioned by Tampa Bay Auto Exchange in April of this year. The vehicle was described as "...beautiful 911 Coupe with aero kit side rails. tires are knee deep in rubber. a one owner car." The car came with a Carfax report. The photos showed no sign of damage and the car looked immaculate.
I paid by wire transfer and the car arrived in May.
Upon examination the car had the following faults:-
1) front headlamp unuseable
2) one of the tires was illegal and had no tread. The remaining tires were cracked and barely legal
3) the car was ex lease so was technically not one owner
4) removal of the carpets inside the hood revealed severe damage to the front passenger fender
5) various knicks and scrapes on the bodywork and a broken 3rd light that was not mentioned in the auction.
I contacted Tampa Bay Auto and they denied being aware of the damage but eventually said they would offer a contribution of $750 towards repairs of $1500. I had no choice but to accept as they said they would withdraw this offer if I asked for more.
I contacted Carfax and asked why the report did not identify the damage. They failed to give a satisfactory answer and denied any responsibility although their guarantee states they will reimburse a buyer if damage comes to light. They will not concede or correspond with me.
I am very annoyed about the whole episode and it has left me out of pocket.
I am annoyed at the dishonesty of Tampa Bay Auto Exchange.

Cost of damage incorrectly stated in British pounds instead of US dollars. The cost of rectifying the damage to the fender is $3000. Sorry if I caused any problem with this.

The issue here is not quite as Dave suggests. It's only the damage to the fender that is $1500. I will have to pay for the tyre replacement, another $500 and get the nicks and front light fixed, another $1000 probably. The point is the seller did not point out that the car had been involved in an accident (which was quite a serious impact) and he did not make that clear, that it was a lease vehicle and not one owner, and lied about the condition of the tyres etc. I bought in good faith and expected the seller to be honest as I live 1000s of miles away.

You say a set of tires, damaged fender, couple of lights and various nicks and scratches, all came to $1500.00 for repair on a PORSCHE? And, they paid half. I can't even get a set of tires for $750.00 on my truck, what's your complaint? Reality check here dude. You got lucky! And, the damage couldn't have been THAT sever to the fender for the money you quoted!!
