I installed a 12' x 30' deck using Trex Brasilla Cayenne in September of 2007. We purchased your product over IPE wood due to the performance claim of low maintenance and the 25 year warranty. Now about a year and a half later we have black mold covering the entire deck.

Trex responded with a "free" cleaning kit. I applied the cleaning solution as directed. It did clear the deck of mold for a few weeks but it's back worse then before. But it also made the product lighter in color.

Contacted Trex again in 2011 asking for compensation to replace the defective Trex Brasillia product. We received a letter back in November 2011 stating "they take their customers very seriously and carully examine all presented material to determine whether a condition falls under a Trex warranty".

They went on further to explain that "mold and mildew grows on all decking materials but the performance of the deck is not affected". [continued below]....
..... (What a joke) "Trex does not warrant against and is not responsible for any condition attributable to environmental conditions such as air pollution, mold, midew, etc."

They went on to say:
"However as a good gesture, Trex offers to arrange for the deck to be professionally cleaned." "Please accept this offer as a resolution to your concerns with Trex deck. Please sign the letter below and return to Trex. Upon receipt. a cleaning contractor will be supplied and will contact you to make arrangements"

If I signed this it would absolve Trex from any futher obligations. Needless to say I did not sign the letter. Do you research prior to choosing your deck material. My advice is to avoid any Trex product.

Trex Consumer Advice

AUTHOR: tre*sucks - (United States of America)

For consumers that have encountered mold problems there is a Class Action Lawsuit against Trex.

If you purchased or obtained Trex decking material from Aug. 1,
2004 through the present, and if your Trex product is exhibiting dark
spotting/mold, you may be eligible to join this suit. To learn more and
receive updates about this case, email or call (206) 623-7292.

The parties agree that consolidation of the mold claims against Trex is appropriate.
Accordingly, the Court will consolidate the Ross action, now consisting only of mold claims,
with the Okano action. The Clerk of the Court shall administratively close the Okano action, and
the consolidated case shall proceed under the Ross case number.

Thanks for your thoughts. I never thought that "something wooden sitting outside for 5 years would
remain pristine". Apparently you didn't comprehend the original post. We cleaned the deck with the Trex supplied chemicals. It cleaned the deck, but the mold was back in a month, and it lightened the entire surface.

The AZ sun as apparently affected your thought process. TREX BRASILLIA is a MOLD MAGNET. The wood slurry/plastic composite is like a petri dish for black mold. Our deck is in full sun all day long, we never had this problem with pressure treated lumber. I don't think Trex offering to clean the deck once going above and beyond. It was a lame offer for a defected product problem they are currently in litigation about.
Good luck in the sun.

Dumb move.

You're nuts.  They're not obligated to fix mold.   They're offering you a free professional cleaning, when it is clear that they could just tell you to go pound sand.   Your post actually has the effect of showing that this company will go beyond their written warranty to make even unreasonable customers happy.   Nice advertisement !

Mold grows where conditions are friendly to mold.   It doesn't much care what surface it grows on.  If there is decking material that guarantees that mold will never grow on it, you probably should have bought it.  But you didn't (probably because it doesn't exist).

  Good luck with your deck.

Why don't you actually read your warranty?

It CLEARLY states in the warranty that "environmental conditions (such as air pollution, mold, mildew, etc.)" are not covered. The warranty is against manufacturer's defects, such as flaking or cracking of the deck. Your deck isn't defective at all, you just need to clean it. Do you really think something wooden sitting outside in the elements for 5 years would still be pristine? What company would actually warranty mildew for 25 years on an outdoor structure? I cant think of a single one.

heaven forbid you actually have to clean your deck every now and again. If your dog takes a crap on it, are you going to complain that their warranty doesn't cover against dog poop?
