Subject: UNITED EXPRESS VAN LINES - ME TOO!!!HELP!!!!

We were quoted $2300 originally. Now they are trying to say we owe them $8400. They added an additional $1300 for packing materials and an additional $4800 for extra cubic feet used, which was twice as much space as estimated.

The movers were supposed to be there originally between 9-11 A.M. They called on the night before to tell us theyd be there now between 11 A.M.-1 P.M. They did not get there until around 4:00 P.M. My husband and I were scheduled to be on the road by 5 P.M. We had to have our brother-in-law stay so we could get on the road.

The movers told my brother-in-law that they usually get tipped around $50. We have never had movers before, we didnt know. We were thinking What is the $2300 for? By this time my husband and I were 2 or more hours from Ohio, what could we do about it? My brother-in-law admits the movers attitudes changed when they realized they werent getting tipped. Is it customary to tip movers? Of course now all this seems irrelevant now. The movers did not just mention a tip once, they kept going on and on about it. My brother-in-law was there until around 10:30 P.M. Unfortunately he had to leave before the movers were completely finished. Although he said it did seem as if they did a good job while he was there, we still have many complaints, aside from the additional costs.

Here is a list of complaints that we have. They dropped an office chair down the stairs and dented our newly refinished hardwood floors, which was an accident, but the damage is done. My husbands grandmother was given a key because she was going to go in and clean up since we didnt have time to due to the movers late arrival. She went to our house a day or two later to find many things wrong. Every light in the house was left on, the back door was left unlocked, the blinds in the big dining room window were lying on the floor, there was a big wad of gum on the dining room floor, and the front storm door was left open.

My husbands father went by our house a few days later just to see how the house looked and thats when he discovered the bill from the movers with the additional $6000 included. My husband immediately called the movers to see what was going on. They took his information and said they would call him back. They never did. Finally my husband called again four days later. They took all of his information again as if they didnt know what he was talking about. He spoke to a manager, whom was extremely rude and unprofessional. The manager said Well see who is right and who is wrong. He also said that we had a big house. Our house is a 2 bedroom with a third room 8x9, we used as an office. How is that a big house? We didnt even have a couch, we had a love seat.

After reading all of the other complaints, I am not exactly sure what to do. We are having a house built and arent due to receive our stuff until the end oh January. All I know is that I dont have $6000.

AUTHOR: Kay - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 15, 2003

Watch Dateline NBC on this Friday 17 January. It will have a story about moving scams and the information may be helpful for you.

Also, though it usually doesn't help, you could contact the Attorney General of Florida (where United Express is located.) Check the Florida
Attorney General's website for directions on how to make a consumer complaint. You might also want to contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (part of the DOT). Just be aware that the moving industry is completely unregulated and for that reason this agency is swamped with
complaints just like yours. They may or may not be able to help you.

Consumers may file household goods or other commercial motor carrier complaints on FMCSA's nationwide complaint hotline at
1-888-368-7238 (1-888 DOT-SAFT). A commercial complaint form is now available on The Safety Violation and the Consumer Household
Goods Commercial Complaint Website Hotline at http://www.1-888-dot-saft.com.

You might also try directly contacting the insurance company of United Express (DOT number 976717) and making a claim for the complete loss of your belongings.
their insurance information is as follows:
policy #: R203650/0006
Attn: LEBOEUF, LAMB, GREENE & MACRAE
Address: 1875 CONNECTICUT AVE.,NW
WASHINGTON, DC US 20009
Telephone: (202) 986 - 8000
Fax: (202) 986 - 8102

good luck.
