I got a phone call from gentleman (I didn't catch his name) from United Publishers of America earlier this summer. He started by telling me I had been entered into a drawing for $5000.00 while repeatedly congratulating me.

He then went on to tell me he was sending me a free woman's diamond watch (which I believe was a scam that circulated a few years ago) and several free magazine subscriptions! He told me I would only have to pay for Better Homes & Gardens and I would receive the other magazines free for three whole year! Wow! Free three magazine subscriptions, a diamond watch, amd a chance to win $5000.00! Sounded like a great deal...except that I don't read magazines.

I was immediately transfered to his supervisor where the detail were discussed. At this point I still didn't understand that I was agreeing to pay for magazines that I could NEVER cancel.

Well the next month my credit card statement had a charge from United Publishers of America for $64.78. I decided to call and cancel. I still hadn't received the first magazine and, as I said earlier, I never read them anyway.

I called the number on the statement and tried to cancel. Well...that's where I got really ticked. It was then that I was informed that I could not cancel. United Publishers had prepaid the magazines and I had to pay them. I cancelled my credit card so they couldn't charge me. Then they hounded me on the phone. I told them to send me paper bills and tried again to call and cancel. No luck! I asked for a supervisor. She said she was the supervisor. I tried to get her to talk to my husband. She wouldn't. Apparently I am stuck with absolutely no choice but to pay this.
